About The Role

The Business Development Manager is responsible for identifying, acquiring, and developing major projects and revenue streams. Primarily focused on main contractors you will combine market research and commercial strategy to build a strong pipeline of funded opportunities, develop key relationships across your assigned customer segments, and drive revenue growth whilst protecting margin. Success requires commercial and sales acumen, strong client relationships, and the ability to work collaboratively with the operations and technical teams.

You will work as part of the commercial sales team alongside colleagues, each covering specific customers and target groups across the UK. This is a strategic sales and business development role focused on customer and business acquisition, sales growth, pricing strategy, and client relationship management.

Key Responsibilities

Sales and Business development: Adopt the commercial strategy and understand the industry landscape, funding schemes, policy changes, and competitor activities. Proactively identify and pursue project, tender and framework opportunities to secure funded projects across assigned segments (e.g., Social Housing, Local Authorities, Main Contractors, Frameworks, Special Projects). Build an in-depth knowledge of the product portfolio to drive sales and specifications across the target markets Client Engagement & Relationship Building: Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients (Local Authorities, Housing Associations, Main Contractors, Developers, Building Owners) to secure projects and sales. Attend shows, conferences, and client meetings. Deliver presentations to senior stakeholders and decision-makers. Act as the primary point of contact for your assigned customers. Proposal Development & Tender Management: Collaborate with internal teams to develop proposals and tender responses. Conduct comprehensive analysis of tender specifications to establish firm scope, commercial viability, and margin protection. Chase and win opportunities to contract signing. Commercial Intelligence & Strategy: Gather and analyse market intelligence on competitor activity, policy changes, and emerging opportunities. Collaborate with government bodies, regulatory agencies, and industry associations to stay informed of policy and funding changes. Leverage the success of existing projects to secure future works and repeat business. Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with Technical, Product Sales, Energy Services, Contracting, and Operations teams to align commercial strategies with operational capabilities. Provide market intelligence and client feedback to support internal teams. Ensure all teams have the information needed to deliver projects effectively. Contract Negotiation: Negotiate contracts and agreements, ensuring successful terms and conditions for InstaGroup and relevant network members. Assess risks and ensure comprehensive scope definition before contract signature. Project Management: Maintain commercial involvement during project delivery for assigned major accounts. Be the primary escalation point for commercial queries and issues. Liaise with clients, contractors, and internal teams to resolve commercial matters and preserve relationships. Do not own project delivery operations – work with Operations team to resolve issues. Subcontractor & Partner Management: Liaise with subcontractors and partners on pricing, performance, and payment matters for assigned projects. Maintain strong relationships with key supply chain partners to enable effective project delivery. Revenue Pipeline & Forecasting: Build and maintain a strong, diversified pipeline of opportunities. Provide accurate forecasting of pipeline value, revenue, and margin. Support reporting requirements monthly and contribute to the understanding of market trends and performance against commercial targets.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
