Business Development Manager- Engineering Steels

Business Development Manager – Barrett Engineering Steels

About the Role

Barrett Engineering Steels’ Bolton site became a critical asset following its acquisition in 2023. Since then, we’ve undergone major investments—upgrading facilities, machinery, and output capabilities—led by an expert team driving continuous growth and development. An exciting opportunity now exists for an experienced Business Development Manager, balancing field work and office-based responsibilities to:

  • Build, develop, and manage a strong customer portfolio
  • Deliver excellence in customer service and technical support
  • Manage the end-to-end sales cycle
  • Proactively onboard new business through:
    • Lead generation
    • Relationship planning and prospecting

As a key member of our internal sales team, your focus will be growing and managing a portfolio of customers, fostering long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.


Specific Tasks

  • Generate business pipelines through:
    • Face-to-face visits
    • Targeted phone calls
    • Marketing strategies
  • Optimise existing customer relationships to unlock full commercial potential
  • Develop new business by targeting projects and leading negotiations to maximise opportunities
  • Evaluate and deliver visit strategies based on customer priority, potential, and location—optimising time and costs
  • Hit assigned sales KPI targets
  • When required, deliver product presentations (covering engineering steels, tools/hardware)
  • Embrace the role of an ambassador, driving the highest standards of customer service

About You

You must demonstrate:

  • Passion, drive, and confidence for finding solutions and working collaboratively and creatively
  • Ability to thrive in a busy sales environment, meeting tight deadlines under pressure

Essential Skills & Requirements

  • Proven B2B field sales experience, with a track record of building accounts in a high-pressure environment—ideally in engineering steels, tools, or heavy industry sectors
  • Outstanding communication skills alongside sharp analytical abilities
  • Ability to build strong relationships quickly, with a proactive mindset and proven success working to targets and KPIs
  • Full UK driving licence (essential due to frequent UK travel, including North & North East, with possible overnight stays)
