Business Development Manager - Marine & Industrial Coatings
Overview
We are looking for an experienced Business Development Manager specialising in marine and industrial coatings to join our commercial team. This full-time, UK-based role will focus on developing new business, nurturing client relationships and driving sales growth across marine, offshore, shipping and industrial sectors. The successful candidate will combine technical knowledge of protective coatings with commercial acumen to secure profitable contracts, influence product development and represent the company at industry events and client meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Business development – identify, pursue and convert new sales opportunities within marine, offshore and industrial markets; develop territory plans, target accounts and pipeline forecasts to meet revenue targets.
- Client relationship management – build and maintain strong relationships with shipowners, shipyards, asset owners, contractors, specifiers and distributors; act as primary commercial contact and trusted advisor.
- Technical-commercial support – provide product and application knowledge to clients and internal teams, support technical presentations, prepare tailored proposals and translate client requirements into commercial terms.
- Tendering & quotations – lead preparation of commercial proposals, pricing, scope definitions and terms; coordinate with estimating, operations and supply chain to produce accurate, competitive bids.
- Market insight & strategy – monitor market trends, competitor activity and regulatory changes affecting coatings for marine and industrial applications; contribute to development of go-to-market strategies and product positioning.
- Contract negotiation – negotiate commercial terms, pricing, delivery schedules and service agreements to secure favourable outcomes while managing commercial risk and margin protection.
- Project handover & account management – ensure smooth transition to operations and supply chain for contract delivery; maintain client satisfaction through proactive communication and issue resolution.
- Stakeholder collaboration – work closely with R&D, technical services, quality and production teams to influence product development, ensure specification compliance and resolve technical queries.
- Reporting & CRM – maintain accurate sales records, opportunity updates and forecasts in the CRM system; prepare regular sales reports and performance reviews for senior management.
- Representation & networking – represent the company at trade shows, conferences and client meetings; deliver technical or commercial presentations and develop industry networks.

Candidate Requirements
- Experience – proven experience (typically 5+ years) in business development or sales within marine, offshore, shipping or industrial coatings or related protective coatings sectors.
- Technical knowledge – good understanding of protective coating systems, surface preparation methods and marine corrosion challenges; able to discuss specifications, standards and application methodologies with technical stakeholders.
- Commercial skills – strong commercial awareness with experience preparing proposals, pricing strategies and negotiating contracts to achieve targets and protect margins.
- Communication & presentation – excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to technical and non-technical audiences and produce clear commercial documentation.
- Relationship building – demonstrable ability to develop and maintain long-term client relationships and to influence decision-makers at senior levels.
- Organisational skills – strong planning and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple opportunities and meet deadlines in a target-driven environment.
- IT proficiency – competent with CRM systems, Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with proposal/quotation tools; willingness to adopt company systems and processes.
- Travel – prepared to travel domestically and internationally as required to meet clients, attend site visits and represent the business at events.
- Qualifications – degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. materials, chemistry, marine engineering, business) is desirable but not essential where demonstrated sector experience exists.
- Professional conduct – operates with integrity, confidentiality and a customer-focused mindset; able to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
