Business Development Manager – Missiles and Fire Control Systems

Location: Ampthill, Bedfordshire (blended working model, UK-based, with occasional UK and US travel)

This role operates on a 4xFlex working pattern (Monday–Thursday, 4-day week).


About the Role

This highly influential position is critical in driving the International strategy for Missiles and Fire Control (MFC) in the UK, with a focus on:

  • Aligning LM weapon systems and equipment platforms with NATO and European nations, maximising revenue streams
  • Engaging stakeholder communities, including (but not limited to):
    • British Army
    • NADG
    • Wider MoD
    • Industry, Academia, and market groups

The role requires regular and frequent engagement with US counterparts, representing the UK MoD position while incorporating UK political and defence-specific market insights into corporate strategy.

Predominantly UK-focused, this position must work in harmony with US counterparts.


Responsibilities

The incumbent will be accountable for:

  • Ownership of the business development process, shaping and influencing the market to:
    • Generate, grow, and manage a strong pipeline of opportunities
  • Collaborate with the capture team to:
    • Develop and execute campaign plans
    • Deploy position-to-win strategies
    • Execute strategic stakeholder engagements
  • Operate both independently and within niche and expansive teams, adapting to the Corporation’s requirements
  • Position Lockheed Martin’s capabilities to meet current and future UK capability requirements, including:
    • Shaping thinking; informing decision-makers; driving the UK engineering and technology agenda
  • Balance customer and corporate demands, offering:
    • Matched technical solutions to meet needs
    • Clear and impactful business cases at an executive level (both within the Customer and to internal leadership)

Key Accountabilities

  1. Market Understanding & Stakeholder Engagement
    • As the domain POC and Voice of the Customer, shape the marketplace.
    • Identify and engage key external stakeholders to:
      • Position LM value propositions
      • Influence procurement decisions

  1. Pipeline Management & Opportunity Growth

    • Identify, qualify, and mature organic and new business opportunities.
    • Ensure opportunities align with business strategy whilst driving high-quality growth.
    • Manage and grow a personal pipeline to meet quantitative KPIs.
    • Lead opportunities through early corporate governance processes, providing:
      • SME (Subject Matter Expertise)
      • Support for capture and programme teams
  2. Strategic & Execution Focus

    • Present innovative business models, leveraging novel constructs to:
      • Drive Market penetration
    • Understand and apply the business’ technology roadmap, capabilities, and value propositions to:
      • Meet customer requirements effectively
    • Engage with political, technical, commercial, and financial market complexity.

Requirements

Skills & Experience

  • Proven Business Development experience in UK MoD pan-Domain.
  • Senior-level professional network across:
    • Industry peers
    • Customer representatives
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly develop new trusted relationships.
  • Engineering/technical acumen, including:
    • Engineering design, spiral development, through-life support
  • Influence over strategic direction at an organizational level.
  • Ability to:
    • Develop new business plans
    • Operationalize market strategy, executing new Go-To-Market plans
    • Work effectively within multi-functional teams
  • Exceptional communication & interpersonal skills.
