Business Development Manager –Regional Independent and On-Trade
Commercial Field Sales Lead (Wine & Spirits) – North of England | Midlands
The Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to join Gonzalez Byass UK at an important stage of growth, taking ownership of a strategically significant commercial territory. We are seeking an ambitious and entrepreneurial drinks professional who can:
- Build partnerships
- Identify opportunities
- Accelerate growth across regional independent and on-trade channels
Representing one of the UK’s most respected wine and spirits portfolios, you’ll work closely with:
- Exceptional producer partners
- Premium brands
- Influential customers across the independent trade, regional wholesalers, and on-trade sector
This is a highly visible, autonomous role, offering the freedom to:
- Shape strategy
- Develop relationships
- Make a tangible impact on commercial success.

The Role
Reporting to the Head of On-Trade, your responsibilities will include:
- Driving growth, distribution, and brand awareness in your territory
- Identifying new commercial opportunities
- Strengthening strategic customer relationships
- Ensuring our portfolio is effectively represented, activated, and championed along the route-to-market

This is a home-based field role requiring:
- Regular travel across your territory
- Occasional overseas travel
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Growth & Account Development
- Build and develop strong relationships while identifying, securing, and growing new business opportunities across:
- Independent and regional on-trade channels
- Deliver sustainable volume and value growth across wines and spirits
- Work closely with wholesaler sales teams to:
- Increase distribution
- Enhance brand engagement
- Conduct tastings, training, and customer activation initiatives
- Support regional trade events and customer engagement activities
- Collaborate with:
- Marketing
- Brand
- Customer marketing
- National account teams
- Execute brand plans aligned with commercial strategy
- Maintain:
- Accurate forecasting
- Pipeline management
- Territory reporting
- Monitor performance against agreed targets and KPIs
About You
You are a commercially driven drinks professional who enjoys:
- Building relationships
- Creating opportunities
- Turning ideas into growth
Desirable Experience & Skills
- Proven experience in wine & spirits sales, wholesale, or regional on-trade development
- Strong understanding of UK drinks route-to-market structures
- Existing relationships with:
- Wholesalers
- Regional groups
- Independent customers
- A track record of:
- Developing accounts
- Delivering sales growth
- Strong:
- Commercial negotiation skills
- Influencing abilities
- Confidence in:
- Presenting
- Training
- Engaging customers
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to work autonomously
- Excellent:
- Organisation
- Planning
- Communication skills
- A genuine passion for premium wines and spirits
- Full UK driving licence
- WSET Level 3 or equivalent is desirable—though commercial ability, relationships, and attitude are equally critical.
