The Vacancy

CR Civil Engineering, part of the RSK Group, is a family-run business based in the Midlands, operating throughout England and Wales. We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Business Development Manager to join our Training Services team in Ripley, UK.

The Role

The Business Development Manager is responsible for driving the commercial growth of the Training Division through the development of new business opportunities, strengthening existing client relationships, and identifying opportunities across the wider Group.

The role combines business development, consultative sales, and key account management, ensuring clients receive training solutions that meet their operational and compliance needs. Working closely with the Lead Trainer and Training Coordinator, the Business Development Manager will ensure customer requirements are translated into successful training delivery.

The role requires an excellent understanding of construction training, plant training, vocational qualifications, and workforce competence to provide informed advice and develop long-term client partnerships.

Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Identify, develop, and secure new training opportunities with external clients.
  • Build relationships with contractors, plant operators, hire companies, civil engineering contractors, and other organizations requiring construction training.
  • Generate new business through networking, referrals, industry events, and targeted business development activity.
  • Develop a pipeline of opportunities to support sustainable business growth.
  • Identify opportunities to introduce additional training services to existing customers.

Internal Group Development

  • Work proactively with Group companies to identify internal training requirements.
  • Build strong relationships with operational managers across the Group.
  • Promote the full range of training services available.
  • Maximize opportunities for cross-selling and collaborative working.
  • Ensure internal customers receive the same high level of service as external clients.

Key Account Management

  • Act as the primary relationship manager for key client accounts.
  • Develop long-term partnerships built on trust and excellent service.
  • Conduct regular customer review meetings.
  • Understand clients' workforce development plans and future training requirements.
  • Respond promptly to customer enquiries and resolve issues in collaboration with the Lead Trainer.

Commercial Responsibilities

  • Support the production of quotations and training proposals.
  • Negotiate commercial terms within delegated authority.
  • Ensure quotations are followed up and converted into confirmed business.
  • Monitor customer activity and identify opportunities for repeat business.
  • Support the Managing Director with larger commercial opportunities and tender submissions.
  • Maintain awareness of competitor activity and market developments.

Operational Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Lead Trainer to ensure training resources are available to meet customer demand.
  • Liaise with the Training Coordinator regarding course scheduling and bookings.
  • Ensure customer expectations are communicated clearly to the training team.
  • Maintain effective communication throughout the customer journey.

Industry Knowledge

  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of:
    • Plant training
    • CPCS and NPORS schemes
    • NVQs
    • CSCS requirements
    • CITB funding and grants
    • National Occupational Standards
    • Construction workforce competence requirements
  • Provide informed advice to customers regarding suitable training pathways.

Customer Service

  • Deliver a professional, responsive, and customer-focused service.
  • Ensure customer feedback is captured and acted upon.
  • Represent the business professionally at meetings, exhibitions, and industry events.
  • Always promote the company’s reputation and values.

Key Requirements, Qualifications, and Skills for the Job

Essential

  • Experience in business development, account management, or sales.
  • Strong knowledge of the construction training industry.
  • Understanding of plant training, vocational qualifications, and workforce competence.
  • Excellent relationship-building and networking skills.
  • Commercial awareness and negotiation skills.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

  • Experience working within an accredited training provider.
  • Knowledge of CPCS, NPORS, and NVQ delivery.
  • Understanding of CITB funding and employer grant schemes.
  • Experience of CRM systems.
  • Experience preparing tenders or commercial proposals.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary Commensurate on experience.
  • Company Car Allowance
  • 42.5 hours / week (Mon – Fri)
