Business intelligence developers must be data experts, as they work primarily with databases and different types of software. This job involves developing and fine-tuning IT solutions that can include anything from coding to testing to debugging to designing to implementing newly developed tools. A BI developer spends a lot of time researching and planning solutions for existing problems within the company. BI developers also are responsible for building OLAP, or online analytical processing. They also work with databases, both relational and multidimensional. The primary focus of this position is to solve problems, BI developers must always be mining data and presenting it in an understandable way. They should be capable of creating tables and writing reports on their findings, and they often simplify highly technical language for others in the company.

Key Responsibilities

The Business Intelligence Developer’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Create and support business intelligence tools and reports, such as physical data models and dimensional analyses
  • Design, code, test, and aggregate results from SQL queries to provide information to users
  • Participate in the design, development, and analysis of data architecture and warehousing approaches
  • Support operational business improvement initiatives by developing and designing new data model requirements, ensuring data model builds align with business needs
  • Validate data integrity, monitor system performance, and deliver on data and analysis requests
  • Help to drive the data warehouse using Azure Synapse Analytics – from system design and implementation through ongoing maintenance
  • Developing commonality across reporting definitions to ensure various groups of business stakeholders understand the output of reports and visualizations
  • Ability to interpret and summarize the results of various analyses in a timely and meaningful way
  • Ensuring quality of reports and visualizations through troubleshooting end user issues
  • Collaborate with internal operations experts to understand their data needs, provide insights, and develop user-friendly reporting to support decision making and process improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with members of the BI, IT, and operational teams to drive data governance
  • Staying current with industry trends, identifying and researching new technologies to innovate the BI process at Nordic
  • Working on projects that may be assigned on an ad hoc basis and may assist other corporate initiatives as necessary

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, Business, or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years, with preference for 3 years of professional work experience in data warehouse and reporting
  • Experience with cloud-based platforms and tools such as Azure is a plus
  • Advanced SQL skills and experience with reporting and visualization tools
  • Healthcare data experience is a plus
  • Experience with an object-oriented programming language like python is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships with a variety of internal customers is key
  • Detail-oriented with ability to dig into the weeds while keeping the big picture reporting goals in mind
  • Strong quantitative and data analysis skills
  • Demonstrated ability to seek out, analyze, and solve problems
  • Must demonstrate and embody Nordic’s maxims
