Job Summary
Are you naturally curious, thrive on challenge, and passionate about using data to make a real difference?
If so, this is your opportunity to join the Management and Information Team within the Defence Afghan Relocation and Resettlement Directorate – a fast-paced, collaborative team working to provide senior leaders with the data and insight they need to make key decisions on a high profile program.
The Defence Afghan Relocation and Resettlement (DARR) Directorate was set up to manage the process for identifying eligible Afghans who supported the UK mission in Afghanistan to come to the UK, and once here to be assisted to begin their new lives with their families. Since 2024 DARR has also been the lead department across Government – on behalf of the Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) - for delivering the Afghan Resettlement Programme (ARP), which brings together all Afghan resettlement schemes: the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy (ARAP), the Afghanistan Response Route (or ARR, set up in response to the Feb 2022 data incident) and the Home Office-led Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS). The intent of the ARP is to exploit synergies across the delivery of the schemes, ensuring maximum value for money and coherence, in particular with respect to the resettlement (accommodation and integration) offer Afghan families receive in the UK. With over 38,000 moved so far across all schemes, it is important and rewarding work that involves significant collaboration across Government, within DARR and internationally, in support of Ministerial ambition to deliver the programme within this Parliament.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Relationships across Government, with Parliament and with the media rely on the ownership and provision of accurate data. You will gain valuable experience of both policy and delivery, working in an environment where there is Ministerial challenge, media scrutiny, legal challenge, and an ever-changing country situation in Afghanistan. Data is vital for good governance and customer service – both the UK taxpayers and Afghan nationals. This is a fast-paced challenging role that contributes to MoD and DARR objectives. Your work will directly influence decisions at the DARR Senior Leadership team.
This post represents an opportunity to have a very significant impact on the effectiveness and efficiency of the scheme. It will bring together work to develop and improve the casework system and a growing requirement for accurate management information about the scheme. This will be a cohering role, bringing together and drawing insight from team members and users who are focused on delivery across DARR.
This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Business Intelligence Officer in the MI Team of the Defence Afghan Relocation and Resettlement (DARR) programme. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due to the time-limited nature of the DARR programme. It is expected to last 23 months but may be extended based on programme and business requirements. The post will begin on your appointment and end 23 months after that date, unless an extension is required and agreed in line with departmental policy. You should be aware that when your Fixed-term Appointment at MOD comes to an end, arrangements will be made in line with the FTA policy.
If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 23 months). At the end of the posting you will return to your previous MoD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.
If you are transferring to MoD from another government department (OGD) you should join the MoD on an inward loan. At the end of the loan you will return to your home (OGD) department. If a loan cannot be agreed between all parties then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA policy for further information.
