Business Manager

Place of Work: London

Contract Type: Permanent

When you join USS, the size and scale of our pension scheme means you will have numerous opportunities to learn and develop your career. Given our size, you'll have real autonomy and influence as you collaborate closely with a wide-ranging team of experts.

Our office is a vibrant place to work, and we offer flexibility of office/homeworking due to our hybrid model.

About the Role

In your role as Business Manager, you will make a meaningful and valued contribution from the outset. This role will provide a great opportunity to act as a strategic partner and trusted adviser to the Group General Counsel (GGC), enabling the effective leadership, prioritisation, and delivery of the GGC function. The role will support the translation of strategic objectives into clear priorities and actionable plans, ensuring alignment across the GGC management team and effective coordination of key initiatives.

In partnership with GGC Operations and other functional leads, the role will help ensure the function operates in a joined-up, focused, and outcome-driven way. Through oversight of strategic priorities, leadership team effectiveness, and cross-functional coordination, the role will enable the GGC to drive performance, maintain organisational alignment, and deliver against its most critical objectives.

What You Will Be Doing

As a trusted part of the Group General Counsel team, you will be responsible for:

Strategic Planning, Prioritisation, and Delivery

  • Partner with the GGC Management Team to shape and deliver the team’s strategic priorities, ensuring clarity of objectives and alignment to wider USS goals.
  • Support the translation of strategic objectives into clear, actionable plans, ensuring priorities are well defined, sequenced, and deliverable.
  • Oversee the tracking and delivery of key strategic initiatives, ensuring appropriate focus, pace, and accountability across the GGC management team.
  • Proactively identify, assess, and escalate risks to delivery, supporting timely and effective resolution.
  • Lead or coordinate delivery of high-impact, cross-functional initiatives on behalf of the GGC, ensuring clarity of scope, ownership, and outcomes.
  • Support the resolution of complex or sensitive issues that cut across teams or require senior stakeholder engagement.
  • Ensure lessons learned and continuous improvement are embedded across key initiatives.

Executive Support and Leadership Enablement

  • Act as a trusted adviser to the GGC, supporting effective decision-making through insight, briefing, and prioritisation support.
  • Enhance effectiveness of the GGC management team, including forward planning and ensuring clear follow-through on actions.
  • Support the GGC in setting and driving a clear direction for the team, ensuring consistent understanding and alignment.
  • Support the GGC on organisational design, talent, and succession planning.
  • Facilitate effective communication and cascade of key messages, priorities, and decisions.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
