About Our Highways Department
Our Highways Department oversees and controls all activity on the highway to support the aim of a safe and reliable highway network. It brings together a range of functions that impact on the network including traffic management, street works and permits, highway maintenance, customer enquiries, and insurance claims.
About the Role
We are looking for a Street Works Technical Assistant to join our Street Works team, who is highly motivated, flexible, and with an appetite for providing excellent customer service to internal and external customers. It is essential that applicants are able to use their initiative as they will be required to work largely unsupervised and able to demonstrate a keen eye for attention to detail. They will be responsible for providing a service which will include drafting and co-ordinating licences for private road works, dealing with utilities working on the highway, working with publishers to advertise roadworks, issuing fees and charges as required, invoicing, and general customer enquiries.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
