Business Support Assistant – Information Management
Two exciting roles available (Freedom of Information & Subject Access Requests)
About the Role
Applications are invited for two full-time positions as Business Support Assistant within Information Management. Both roles report to a supervisor and will form part of a small, collaborative team. You’ll provide essential support to disclosure officers, handling public and agency enquiries while delivering efficient administrative services.
The primary responsibilities include:
- Logging work in case management systems to meet legislative timeframes
- Interpreting legislation & guidance to advise on information disclosures
- Covering for each other in periods of absence (organic rotation between FOI and Subject Access Request teams)
Key Responsibilities
The role requires independence and initiative, with core tasks including:

Public-facing support:
- Respond systematically to enquiries from members of the public and professional bodies
- Represent the service with professionalism and courteous efficiency

Operational excellence:
- Manage daily workload while balancing demand and statutory deadlines
- Interrogate force computer systems and adapt swiftly to new software tools

Cross-team collaboration:
- Assist with wide-ranging administrative requests across the department
- Foster good working relations within the team and wider Information Management

- All staff must uphold strict personal accountability standards
Working Arrangements
- Office location: Lloyd House, Birmingham (required at least three days per week)
- Hours: Core schedule 08:00–16:00 (Mon–Fri) with hybrid working at 60% remote flexibility
- Cover rota: Both positions will cover responsibilities in each other’s areas of focus
Essential Criteria
- Attention to detail: An absolute necessity for legal and case-related accuracy
- Autonomy & adaptability: Ability to follow direction while solving tasks independently
- Customer service excellence: Polished handling of telephone, email, and face-to-face queries
- MS Office proficiency: Strong keyboard/computer skills with Microsoft applications
Desirable Experience
(To set both candidates up for success):
- Prior exposure to Freedom of Information (FOI) or Data Protection processes
- Administrative experience in any professional capacity
Additional Information
Decision-Making & Accountability
Under the Police & Criminal Evidence Act 1984, all staff must conform to heightened standards of privacy management. This is crucial to ensure accountability for police powers and duty of care disclosures.

- Pre-employment checks: Successful applicants will undergo Recruitment Vetting including a thorough background and financial enquiry
