Business Support Assistant
Business Support Assistant – Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. The DBS also prevents unsuitable individuals from working with children and/or vulnerable adults through its barring function.
This role supports the DBS department by providing efficient, clerical, and administrative services to ensure smooth operations and compliance.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct searches on police systems and databases, analysing information to identify records related to DBS applicants.
- Prepare basic correspondence (letters, reports, and email responses) as required.
- Maintain accurate record-keeping, filing, and data entry, adhering to Management of Police Information (MOPI) and Data Protection Principles.
- Provide general clerical support, including managing incoming and outgoing post and emails, while responding to enquiries from internal colleagues, other forces, and external agencies via phone, email, or in person.
- Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion, including redacting sensitive data where necessary to ensure compliance with data protection laws.
- Process large volumes of data with attention to accuracy to deliver a high-quality service for safeguarding vulnerable groups.
- Meet Service Level Agreements by managing workload, prioritising tasks, and achieving set business objectives.
- Perform any additional duties consistent with the role’s responsibilities and grading.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to complete research, assess, and evaluate data.
- Capable of collating findings in structured reports with high accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong decision-making skills and the ability to make informed choices.
- Experience in communicating with diverse individuals and organisations (telephone, written, or face-to-face).
- Computer literate, proficient in using multiple computer packages simultaneously.
- Demonstrates integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism when handling sensitive information.
- Ability to work independently and organise prioritise workloads without close supervision.
- Can work under pressure while meeting targets, deadlines, and performance indicators.
Hours of Work and Flexibility
- Full-time role (37.5 hours per week) between 08:00–16:00, Monday to Friday.
- Hybrid working model – 60% on-site, with flexibility for remote work where feasible.
Vetting and Medical Requirements
- Successful candidates must undergo Recruitment Vetting and Security Clearance, including a full background and financial disclosure check.
- Employment is contingent upon passing medical checks, which may include a drugs test.
