Business Support Officer

Business Support Officer - Coroner’s Court Faraday Court, Fulwood, Preston Salary: £25,989 - £28,142 per annum | Full-time, Permanent, 37 hours/week

Notice: This role is not open to international sponsorship.


About the Role

Join a dedicated team supporting HM Coroners in their critical statutory duties, investigating and reporting on deaths. As the Business Support Officer for the Coroner’s Court, you will provide essential administrative and operational assistance, ensuring compliance with coronial law and local procedures.

In a sensitive and demanding environment, you will bridge gaps between the Coroner, relevant agencies, and families affected by death. This role requires a rare blend of ** attenuate attention to detail**, empathy, resilience, and strong organisational skills while adhering to rigorous legal processes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Administrative and Operational Support

    • Efficiently process deaths referred to the Coroner court, ensuring accurate record-keeping.
    • Coordinate the listing and administration of inquests, including scheduling, notifications, and paperwork compliance.
  • Interagency Liaison

    • Act as a conduit between Coroners, Medical Examiners, Registrars, mortuary staff, GPs, police officers, funeral directors, funeral directors, and other external stakeholders.
    • Coordinate technical checks and updates, liaising closely with contractors or external agencies where necessary.

  • Health & Safety Compliance

    • Conduct weekly and monthly checks of critical building systems, including:
      • Fire alarms
      • Emergency lighting
      • Water utilities and access routes
  • Client and Public Engagement

    • Handle telephone, email, post and in-person enquiries with tact and discretion.
    • Perform reception duties, including greeting families and witnesses entering the building (lock/unlock doors, maintain confidentiality).
  • Continuous Improvement

    • Stay up to date with changes in coronial legislation, local policies, and procedural updates.
    • Contribute to operational improvements within the team and office.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to perform administrative functions with high accuracy under tight deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written, verbal, and non-verbal), with the ability to interact compassionately with bereaved families and sensitive stakeholders.
  • Proven organisational skills, with strict attention to code, juggling multiple priorities efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, Access) and a willingness to adapt quickly to specialised systems.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to navigate morally complex situations with professionalism.
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritise tasks, and maintain confidentiality in line with GDPR and coronial laws.
