Coroners Service Business Support Officer – Faraday Court, Fulwood, Preston [Permanent, Full Time] | Salary: £25,989 - £28,142 per annum | 37 hours per week
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join a small team supporting HM Coroners in fulfilling their statutory duties related to investigating deaths.
The Business Support Officer – Coroners’ Court at Faraday Court, Fulwood, Preston, will provide high-quality administrative support to ensure:
- Efficient and sensitive processing of deaths referred to the Coroner.
- Accurate listing and administration of inquests in line with coronial law and local procedures.
- Support for the Coroner in handling sensitive cases, requiring exceptional organisation, accuracy, resilience, and interpersonal skills.
- Quick adaptability to new systems, strong IT proficiency (especially Microsoft applications), and continuous legal/process updates.

Additional Responsibilities
- Conduct weekly and monthly Health and Safety checks (fire alarms, water systems, lighting).
- Liaise with Coroner’s Officers, Medical Examiners, Registrars, mortuaries, GPs, police, and funeral directors.
- Manage inquiries via telephone, email, post, and in-person.
- Perform reception duties (locking/unlocking facilities, welcoming families/witnesses).
- Drive continuous improvement to keep up with Coroners legislation and internal policies.
Requirements
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
- Exceptional communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to prioritise workloads, work independently, and deliver accuracy under tight deadlines.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (or willingness to train).
- Resilience, sensitivity, and a calm demeanour in handling sensitive matters.
