The Role: Business Tax Manager

This is a key role within the Business and Corporate Tax team. The successful candidate will deliver a mixed portfolio of compliance and tax advisory services, serving a diverse mix:

  • Owner-managed companies
  • Large international groups across various industries

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Portfolio Management

    • Manage a portfolio of business tax clients, ensuring compliance deadlines are met.
    • Build strong client relationships and identify opportunities for Menzies’ assistance.
  • Tax Advisory & Strategic Support

    • Provide tax advice and advisory projects in collaboration with colleagues across Menzies’ offices and service lines.
    • Assist with succession planning, remuneration planning, capital expenditure, and capital allowances.
    • Have a strong understanding of Business Asset Disposal Relief, Business Property Relief, and related issues.

  • Entrepreneur Support

    • Guide entrepreneurial businesses through their lifecycle:
      • Protect and leverage intellectual property (IP)
      • Determine optimal business structures
      • Incentivise staff and support international growth
      • Build and protect value for shareholders
  • Specialist Advisory

    • Advise on equity incentivisation (e.g., EMI option schemes).
    • Identify opportunities for tax planning, risk mitigation, and cross-selling service offerings.
  • Team & Compliance Leadership

    • Assist with training and management of the business tax team.
    • Train and mentor juniors within the Business Tax Team.
    • Ensure all policies for technical rigor, ethics, risk, and compliance are strictly upheld.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified accountant or CIOT-qualified tax adviser with at least one year of post-qualification experience in a tax-related role.
  • Experience at manager or assistant manager level in corporate/entrepreneurial client management.
  • Strong technical know-how in corporate tax matters.

Key Knowledge Areas

  • Tax issues impacting owner-managed businesses (OMBs) and shareholders.
  • UK accounting standards, financial reporting, and analysis.
  • Systems proficiency: MS Office, database skills (Alphatax preferred but not mandatory).

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication and organisation skills.
  • Proficient in networking, proposal writing, and portfolio expansion.
