Business Unit Director – Healthcare Central
Location: Birmingham & Hampshire Type: Permanent, Full-time (37.5 hours/week)
About the Role
Equans is seeking a Business Unit Director, Healthcare Central to lead sustainable facilities management operations across £120m healthcare contracts in Birmingham and Hampshire. Reporting to the Managing Director, Public Sector Central & Southwest, this pivotal role responsibilities include operational leadership, strategic growth, and ensuring safe, compliant, and resilient service delivery across acute healthcare environments.
The recognised authority within the team will develop strategy, drive operational excellence, and build partnerships to align Equans’ objectives with patient safety, regulatory compliance, and long-term service growth as the PFI period expires.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop and implement regional healthcare strategy aligned withEquans’ sustainability, operational excellence, and growth goals
- Proactively commit as an executive leadership voice, deputising for senior managers as required
- Manage cross-stakeholder relationships with:
- NHS Trusts
- PFI stakeholders and clinical leaders
- Public sector bodies
- Internal managers and specialists
Operational Excellence & Compliance
- Oversee £120m revenue portfolio, including:
- Hard and soft facilities management across multiple hospitals
- Lifecycle removal and defect rectification
- Project delivery in live clinical settings
- Ensure safe, compliant, and resilient delivery of FM services, maintaining statutory, contractual, and industry standards
- Manage profit-and-loss accountability, forecasting, waste-in-progress (WIP), and cash flow -Holder ultimate culpability for count monitoring, risk registration, and oversight of incident investigations, corrective actions, and process improvements
Health & Safety Leadership
- Champion zero harm culture in all operations, prioritising safety protocols
- Drive performance reviews, prompt reporting, and alignment with health & safety regulations
- Integrate safety risks assessment into decision-making, commercial planning, and delivery

Customer & Market Leadership
- Enhance NHS and stakeholder trust, ensuring contractual fulfilment and meeting patient-co-designed service outcomes
- Dominate healthcare FM market intelligence, anticipating demand and advocating for Decarbonisation, waste reduction, and policies for innovation
- Position Equans as an innovative, compliant technology partner in live environments through engagement with predictive maintenance and sustainability initiatives
Financial & Commercial Responsibility
- Demonstrate cash performance results improvement, robust cost controls, and enhanced team billing principles
- Mitigate risks in relation to wipe, lifecycle, defect, and project spend, ensuring alignment with revenue targets
People & Succession
- Cultivate high-performing teams through leader training, accountability, inclusion, and mentorship practices
- Build succession plans and support networks (BD equity improvement, acceleration mechanisms)
Transformative Growth & Development
- Identify expansion prospects across existing contracts, acquisition targets, and retention strategies
- Align flood regional enterprise chanchment with Bouygues Group distinctive assets while commercialising PFI contracts
Social Value & Sustainability
- Embed sustainability, local skills & employment, and carbon reduction objectives into core business philosophy and decision-making
- Champion societal value by supporting goals such as local procurement, apprenticeships, and environmental initiatives
Candidate Requirements
Experience & Skills
✔ Proven leadership in multi-discipline, high-value Facilities Management operations (primarily acaduan & healthcare) ✔ NSR experience, specialized in acute environments – including PFI contract complexities ✔ Track record in Contract Man amygdala mapper, negotiation, strategic enhancement of secured revenues ✔ Executive stakeholder management with record in customer growth ✔ Multi-service contracter, strong service delivery for project teams of 200plus members across service line ✔ Commercial expertise: P&L responsibility, financial forecasting, debt and working capital ✔ Robust demonstration of Risk management and change management for improving service operations ✔ Understanding and leadership of market transitions
