Buyer – Purchasing Role

About the Role As a Buyer, you will be responsible for procuring materials via the MRP system to assigned planner workbenches, adhering to action messages to ensure timely material receipts that align with business needs, including sub-contract orders. You will develop a personal savings plan to address operational challenges.


Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Secure cost-competitive materials and parts, maintaining correct quality, lead-time compliance, and on-time delivery for production.
  • Manage and oversee the company’s external suppliers within the defined business cell structure.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with existing suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • Process sub-contract operations, ensuring swift turnaround of parts to meet business requirements.
  • Foster key relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Implement a personal savings and on-cost tracker.
  • Address defective material timelines and initiate corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Assist with MRP system updates and enhancements.
  • Drive improvements in Supplier On-Time Delivery, targeting key and non-key accounts.
  • Continuously review and optimise purchasing methods, reducing external spend.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Undertake mandatory training as assigned by the role manager.
  • Support the department manager or directors with reasonable requests, including temporary coverage during staff shortages.
  • Periodically perform ad-hoc duties, such as:
    • Training
    • Departmental administrative tasks
    • Short-term secondments to other functions

Fiscal & Management Authority

Approved Tasks:

  • Submit and sign off purchase orders in compliance with financial guidelines.

Reserved Control:

  • No changes to Business Management System processes, procedures, or guidelines without formal approval, though suggestions are encouraged.

Professional Knowledge & Experience

Preferred Skills & Background:

  • Purchasing experience within Aerospace / Defence / Manufacturing, with some technical knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Basic understanding of engineering drawings and associated specifications.
  • Proven negotiation abilities, demonstrated through cost-saving or supplier-strengthening outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills to influence and engage across all hierarchies—especially in supplier interactions.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.

Compensation

Salary: Market-rate (minimum & maximum based on GBP and role requirements). Incentives: Market competitive.
