Buying Manager for Prepared Veg & DFNS
About the Role
As Buying Manager for Prepared Vegetables & DFNS (Density Foods & Nuts, Seeds, Dried Fruit), you will lead a thriving convenience market category through insight-driven innovation, product development, raw material sourcing, supplier partnerships, and trade strategy.
You will deliver a £340m business spanning Nuts, Seeds, Dried Fruit, and Prepared Vegetables, blending fast-paced commercial execution with long-term strategic leadership. Collaborating with internal and external partners, you will shape the future of healthy, convenient meal solutions and snacking, while ensuring Tesco remains the customer’s first choice for quality, value, and innovation.
A key focus will be leadership of supplier partnerships, driving partnership development, collaboration, and shared success.
Key Responsibilities

Commercial & Strategic Leadership
- Own sales, profit, and outperforming financial targets
- Deliver the budget for the category and drive sustainable growth
- Build a customer-focused, long-term category strategy that rivals supermarkets and on-the-go food outlets

Competitive & Market Strategy
- Analyse competitors (physical, online, beyond retail) to develop a market-winning plan
- Drive customer loyalty, quality, and innovation, outpacing the market
- Curate and execute market-leading sell plans for operational excellence

Supplier Management & Procurement
- Source, develop, and manage branded and own-brand (OB) suppliers to meet business targets
- Ensure product quality standards are consistently met
- Collaborate on Buy/Move/Grow plans for optimal efficiency

Insight & Performance Analysis
- Use data tools to identify performance trends and opportunities
- Work cross-functionally with Product Development, Technical, and Sourcing teams to drive a profitable Tesco brand

Budget & Forecasting
- Forecast, manage budgets effectively, and achieve quantum profit, volume, and market share targets
- Maintain cost consciousness without compromising quality

Team Leadership
- Develop a high-performing team, fostering career growth and opportunities
- Drive collaboration across Business Units (BU) and global stakeholder groups
Key Requirements

Ideal Experience
- Previous buying experience, preferably as an experienced Buying Manager seeking broader responsibility or accelerated career progression
- Category management experience, with cross-category delivery and end-to-end NPD (New Product Development)

Essential Skills
- Strong negotiation, communication, and supplier relationship management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint), with data-driven analytical skills
- Proven leadership and stakeholder management experience
