AVAILABILITY NEEDS

  • For Fall 2026 must be available to work
    • Monday-Thursday 7am-1:30pm or 2:00pm-8:30pm
  • Available evenings to support various campus events

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, the Convenience Store Associate-I assists customers by performing job duties throughout various Convenience Store locations, including the Bookstore C-Store, Art Store and other Convenience Stores across campus. This role is responsible for providing superior guest service, handling sales transactions, and maintaining store and dining area operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides excellent customer service at all times.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of store products and services
  • Assist customers in all aspects of service fulfillment, including greeting customers, taking orders, collecting payment, and making change.
  • Crosstrain and work in all Convenience Store locations as needed
  • Perform sales support functions related to POS
  • General housekeeping, stocking, organizing, pricing, and merchandising duties
  • Use computerized software to look up stock information and operate a cash register
  • Receive, verify, sort, and distribute goods and supplies
  • Make on-campus deliveries and represent Retail Services locations at campus events
  • Assist with clerical duties, research, and special projects
  • Answer telephone calls and emails, follow-up with appropriate personnel as needed
  • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of locations
  • Adhere to campus and company sustainability initiatives
  • Comply with all health and safety regulations of the Health Department and OSHA
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job

CONDITIONS OF POSITION

Work Schedule

Work shifts are scheduled during regular Convenience Store operating hours, which are Monday through Sunday with varied hours that include mornings, afternoons, evenings, and nights. Work schedules align with the CSULB Academic Calendar, with peak activity during academic semesters and reduced hours during academic breaks, based on operational needs. The employee must provide a minimum of 12 hours of availability during academic semesters; however actual hours assigned may vary.

Physical Demands

This position requires frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout retail areas. The employee must regularly lift and carry items up to 40 pounds, and perform tasks involving bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing ladders or step stools. Pushing and pulling carts or hand trucks may be required. Travel between campus locations—sometimes up to ½ mile—is also necessary. Use of hands and fingers is essential for operating registers, handling merchandise, and completing clerical tasks. Work may take place in varying temperatures, including refrigerated areas and outdoor environments.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in busy convenience store and storage areas with tight workspaces and moderate to loud noise levels. Temperature conditions vary from climate-controlled indoor areas to outdoor environments, depending on assignment. Employees may also work in refrigerated areas. Duties are performed across multiple operating locations in the CSULB campus. The employee will work with chemicals used in cleaning and sanitizing location.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or experience

The employee must be a current and active CSULB student enrolled in a minimum of 6 units.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

The employee must have the California Food Handler Card OR the ability to obtain the CA Food Handler Card within the first 30 days of employment.

Knowledge and Abilities

The employee must have the ability to effectively communicate in English both written and oral form. They must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and must be customer service oriented. The employee must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. They must have the ability to follow written instructions regarding safety procedures. The employee must also have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The ability to understand and comply with University and Beach Shops policies and procedures is required.
