Cable Design Engineer (HV cables)

HV Cable Systems Design Engineer – Remote

**** Must be based in the UK ****

We are working with a specialist consultancy in the energy sector that provides expert engineering and advisory services across electricity networks, distributed energy resources, HVDC systems, protection & control, and power market studies.

The company has a proven track record of supporting utilities, grid operators, and renewable energy developers across the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North America. Their portfolio covers network studies, modelling and simulations, technical due diligence, detailed design, and project delivery — all contributing to the global energy transition.

They are now seeking an experienced HV Cable Systems Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of high-voltage underground cable projects up to 400 kV.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver design work for HVAC or HVDC underground cable systems up to 400 kV under the guidance of senior engineers. Prepare design documentation, including cable sizing, ampacity, short-circuit withstand, TMF, and sheath voltage calculations. Develop specifications for cables, accessories, and route design. Carry out technical studies and ensure compliance with relevant standards, CDM regulations, and company procedures. Work collaboratively with civil, structural, and protection teams to ensure cohesive project delivery. Contribute to tendering, estimation, and design input during project development stages. Participate in design reviews and quality checks of deliverables. Support continuous improvement in design processes, tools, and technical documentation

Required Skills

Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical or Power Engineering. 3–8 years’ experience in HV/EHV cable system design within consultancy, utility, or EPC environments. Solid technical understanding of underground cable systems for both HVAC and HVDC applications. Hands-on experience using CYMCAP for thermal rating studies; familiarity with tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, or PSCAD is advantageous. Knowledge of UK transmission and distribution standards and specifications (National Grid, DNOs, OFGEM). Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering environment and communicate clearly with colleagues and clients. Detail-oriented, proactive, and committed to delivering high-quality technical outputs.
