Job Description – CAD/CAM Engineer (Siemens NX)
Job Purpose
The CAD/CAM Engineer is responsible for managing engineering projects from receipt of customer purchase order through to the successful manufacture and completion of components. The role requires advanced knowledge of Siemens NX CAD/CAM software and Siemens CNC controls, ensuring efficient programming, optimisation of machining processes, and technical support to the workshop.
The successful candidate will act as the technical interface between Engineering, Production and Quality, ensuring components are manufactured safely, efficiently and to the required customer specification.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management
- Take ownership of engineering projects from receipt of Purchase Order through to final completion.
- Review customer drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
- Develop manufacturing strategies for complex machined components.
- Liaise with customers where technical clarification is required.
- Monitor project progress and provide engineering support throughout manufacture.
- Ensure engineering deliverables are completed in line with project timescales.
CAD Engineering
- Produce accurate 3D models using Siemens NX.
- Create manufacturing drawings where required.
- Modify customer models to suit manufacturing requirements.
- Maintain revision control of all engineering documentation.
- Develop fixture, tooling and work holding models.
CAM Programming
- Produce efficient CNC machining programs using Siemens NX CAM.
- Generate programs for multi-axis CNC machining centers and CNC lathes.
- Select suitable cutting tools and machining strategies.
- Optimise machining cycles to improve productivity while maintaining quality.
- Simulate machining operations to eliminate collisions and reduce machine downtime.
- Produce setup sheets and machining documentation for workshop personnel.

Siemens CNC Controls
The successful candidate must possess an excellent working knowledge of Siemens CNC controls and be capable of:
- Programming and editing Siemens CNC programs directly at the machine.
- Understanding and modifying ShopMill/ShopTurn cycles where applicable.
- Troubleshooting machine control issues.
- Optimising feed rates, spindle speeds and machining parameters.
- Supporting machine operators with program prove-out.
- Diagnosing programming and control-related faults.
- Understanding machine kinematics and machine-specific configurations.
- Working confidently with Siemens Sinumerik controls.
Manufacturing Engineering
- Determine the most efficient machining sequence.
- Specify tooling and work holding requirements.
- Support fixture design.
- Reduce machining times through continuous improvement.
- Resolve technical manufacturing issues.
- Assist with first-off inspections and prove-out of new programs.
- Support production throughout the machining process.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Ensure all machining programme's meet customer drawing requirements.
- Work closely with Quality to resolve non-conformances.
- Investigate manufacturing issues and implement corrective actions.
- Promote Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Continuously improve programming methods and machining efficiency.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Work in accordance with company Health & Safety procedures.
- Ensure safe machining practices are incorporated into all programme's.
- Comply with ISO 9001 Quality Management procedures.
- Maintain accurate engineering records and documentation.

Essential Skills & Experience
The successful candidate must demonstrate:
- Extensive experience using Siemens NX CAD/CAM.
- Strong understanding of Siemens Sinumerik CNC controls.
- Experience programming CNC milling and turning machines.
- Experience with 3-axis, 4-axis and 5-axis machining.
- Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of tooling, cutting data and machining strategies.
- Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes.
- Strong problem-solving ability.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Desirable Experience
- Experience within heavy engineering or precision machining.
- Experience machining large rotating equipment.
- Knowledge of Fanuc and Heidenhain controls (advantageous).
- Fixture and tooling design experience.
- Reverse engineering experience.
- Knowledge of CMM inspection processes.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems.

Authority & Responsibility
The CAD/CAM Engineer is responsible for the technical engineering of projects from purchase order through to completed manufacture. The role has authority to determine machining methods, programming strategies, tooling selection and manufacturing processes, while working collaboratively with Production, Quality and Management to ensure successful project delivery.
