Café Leader – Job Description

About Creative Living Centre

Creative Living Centre is a mental health charity based in Prestwich, North Manchester. We promote community wellbeing through tailored courses, group sessions, and one-to-one support—empowering individuals to improve their mental health. Our services are flexible, inclusive, and sustainable, fostering a safe environment for long-term support.


The Role: Café Leader

Reporting to the Manager, the Café Leader will oversee our Wednesday lunchtime café provision, including food preparation, hygiene, stock management, and volunteer support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meal Preparation: Create a balanced, nutritious, fully-vegetarian three-course meal each week.
  • Food Safety & Hygiene: Adhere to strict food hygiene regulations, including cleaning equipment, surfaces, and workspaces.
  • Stock Control: Manage stock rotation and secure sustainable food sources (primarily via FareShare).
  • ** Sustainability**: Maximise use of surplus food to minimise waste while ensuring high nutritional value.
  • Volunteer Support: Supervise and train volunteers in kitchen and café operations.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain records for food safety systems, inventory, and obligations.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

✅ Experience: 1+ year in kitchen or food-based environments, including planning and preparing varied meals. ✅ Food Safety Knowledge: Proficient in hygiene, cleaning procedures, and allergen control, with an understanding of food safety management systems (FSMS). ✅ Compliance: Familiar with health & safety in kitchen settings and able to maintain up-to-date training (e.g., food hygiene qualifications).

Desirable but Not Essential

🔹 Experience in charity, community, or care-related settings. 🔹 Experience working with people who have mental health needs. 🔹 Experience in busy kitchens (e.g., commercial, schools, care homes). 🔹 Skills in budget management and leading teams. 🔹 Qualifications: Mental Health awareness, Food/Nutrition studies or safeguarding training.

Hours, Salary & Conditions

📅 Schedule: 6 hours per week on Wednesdays (9:00am–3:30pm), with flexibility where possible. 💶 Salary: £13.32/hour (£4,155.72 per annum).
