About the Role
Wolverhampton City of Youth Culture is seeking an experienced Arts Producer specialising in the public realm to lead the Visual Arts Trail as part of a £1million+ three-year programme co-founded by Arts Council England and local partners.
The successful candidate will commission, co-produce, and oversee the installation of nine visual artworks across Wolverhampton’s city centre over three years, engaging youth groups in a co-creation process alongside other cultural and educational initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
The Freelance Visual Arts Trail Producer will be responsible for:
- Commissioning and collaborating with artists to develop site-specific works in partnership with local youth groups, ensuring inclusive co-creation from concept to final installation.
- Identifying and engaging with youth organisations to co-design artworks, with ongoing support from the Programme Manager.
- Managing artist delivery by ensuring works are completed on time, on budget, and meet installation requirements (including logistical planning and risk assessments).
- Securing permissions for public realm installations, liaising with Wolverhampton City Council, building owners, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth placements.
- Overseeing installations in collaboration with site partners, including technical logistics and compliance.
- Working with the Digital Arts Trail Producer to integrate the commissioned artworks into an interactive digital platform, enhancing public engagement.
- Maintaining documentation for reporting to Arts Council England and enabling Wolverhampton University’s impact evaluation.

Requirements & Experience
You will have:
- Proven experience in commissioning visual artists from award stage through to completed installations, including public realm projects.
- Strong background in non-gallery contexts, such as festivals, streetscapes, and accessible cultural events.
- Budget management skills for artistic commissions and related logistics.
- Stakeholder engagement expertise, including negotiating with local authorities, private sector owners, and community groups.
Fee & Commitment
- £12,500 fee for the year-one comprehensive brief.
- 20-hour work commitment per week for an initial one-year period (subject to further opportunity).
- Budget for commissioned artworks and digital trail will be assigned upon interview shortlisting.
A supervised register of artworks is available upon request from Wolverhampton Univeristy.

Since August 2023, Wolverhampton cultural organisations have received £850,000 from Arts Council England’s Place Partnership Programme, further bolstered by match funding and colleagues, totalling £1M over three years.

The programme remains broadly consistent annually but will evolve organically.
Expected anniversaries: The final three-year installment will culminate in a Celebration of Youth Culture on Sussex Street.
