Camera Operator
Previous applicants who have not previously been successful for this role in the last 6 months are not eligible to apply on this occasion.
Prospective officers and staff must be held to a higher standard of behaviour and accountability than members of the public, and that therefore their right to privacy can be fettered in certain circumstances. This is to ensure that members of the police are fully aware and accountable for the unique powers entrusted to them and the standards of professional behaviour they swear to uphold.
The Camera Enforcement Unit has an exciting opportunity for you to join as a Camera Operator in a challenging and rewarding team. The position is on a full-time, permanent basis with seasonal shift work, including weekends. As a Camera Operator, you will be working across the West Midlands and will work alone within the confines of an enforcement vehicle at the side of the road, detecting speeding and other offences such as not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone.
You will work unsupervised and will be required to undertake manual handling of equipment necessary to the role. You will require the right attributes for the physical and emotional resilience that is needed to deal with challenging situations in the course of your duties. You will also have to assist with the adjudication of camera detected offences.
We really welcome your interest in joining our Police Force. We are looking for talented and inspirational people who put the needs of the public at the heart of everything that they do and would want to make a difference. If you feel that you are that person then we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake speed enforcement checks using mobile speed detention cameras along with average and variable speed cameras
- Liaise with officers undertaking enquiries in relation to camera offences.
- To make statements, produce evidential media copies of speed enforcement offences, collect and record associated documentation of evidence and attend court when necessary.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example: in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. In these circumstances, the employer could select the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job, as they would do for non-disabled applicants.
“Diversity and Inclusion Vision: Maximise the potential of people from all backgrounds through a culture of fairness and inclusion to deliver the best service for our communities”
West Midlands Police is the second-largest police force in the country, serving the three major cities of Birmingham, Coventry, and Wolverhampton, alongside the districts of Sandwell, Walsall, Solihull, and Dudley.
Against this backdrop, the force handles more than 2,000 emergency calls every day, while patrolling the streets and responding to incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have made significant improvements in reducing overall crime, improving call response times, and increasing arrest rates. This work can only continue with the right people, therefore as an employer of choice, we are looking for the right people who can serve and protect our communities.
