Job Title: Camp Counselor

Responsible to: Head Counselor

Position Purpose

Be the best and most memorable Counselor you can be!

Camp Counselors are the main caregivers for all Campers, taking responsibility for planning, organizing, and implementing the activities program. It is the Counselors’ responsibility to maximize their Campers’ experience at Camp Tall Timbers by guiding them through activities, extending the learning opportunities, and seeking opportunities for their personal growth.

Essential Job Functions

Supervision

  • Counselors are responsible for the direction, supervision, and organization of the Campers in the following areas at all times: Cabins, campgrounds, during all activities.
  • Apply clear and directive communication to your Campers, making them aware of your expectations. You should work as a team to respect diversity and encourage youth involvement and empowerment.
  • Be informed and implement all camp safety rules all of the time. Report to your Head Counselor with any concerns.

Activity Implementation

  • Participate in the planning of the camp activities program, giving creative and constructive input where appropriate.
  • Teach and assist camp activities with passion and enthusiasm. Be an active leader and a good role model. Do the best you can every time!
  • Allow for spontaneity and extension beyond your activity’s framework to maximize learning opportunities for all children.
  • Assist in all activity areas such as waterfront, arts and crafts, games, and sports as directed.

Health and Safety Implementation

  • Be responsible for the daily care of each and every Camper under your supervision, being mindful of any personal health needs.
  • Oversee that any required medications are taken by campers under your supervision under the direction of the Health Care Manager.
  • Be alert to both Campers and fellow Counselors general personal/health issues and concerns. Be supportive, responsible, and discreet, seeking support from your Head Counselor or Camp Director where necessary.
  • Throughout the day and evening, be alert to any equipment and facilities maintenance issues, reporting any concerns to your Camp Director.

Role Model

  • Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set good examples all of the time to staff and campers in regard to teamwork, using initiative, being proactive, and going the extra mile!

Other Duties

  • Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communications as directed.
  • Assist in planning and participate in other camp activities as assigned such as evening activities, special events, and other camp functions.
  • Adhere to and ensure others adhere to all safety and security rules and procedures.

Qualifications And Skill Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or a High School graduate.
  • Must be able to obtain or hold a current First Aid Certificate/CPR.
  • Must submit a health history record and examination form prior to the first day of work.
  • Must have the ability to work with people of all ages and levels.
  • Understand the development needs of the youth.
  • Demonstrate a proactive and positive approach to work all the time.
  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge in specific camp program areas.

Physical Aspects of the Job

  • Be able to work within a team of campers and staff and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff where appropriate.
  • Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Ability to endure prolonged standing, bending, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching.
  • Necessary eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities.
  • The normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs.
  • Willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
