Campus Safety and Security is responsible for ensuring our students, staff and visitors feel welcome and safe whilst on our 64-acre campus. As a member of the services management team, the Campus Safety and Security Duty Manager is one of four roles working on a shift pattern 24/7, 365 managing a shift team and working with other managers and the teams to foster an approachable and engaging service that supports the needs of our community.

The role includes line managing the shift team and allocating work during the shift, dealing with any incidents and identifying risks and next steps, maintaining and promoting the safety and security of all university students, staff and visitors, property, facilities and equipment and being the incident manager for any emergency response.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Responsible for overseeing and setting operational tasks and targets in line with service levels and performance indicators.
- Responsible for the daily operational and staff management of the shift team to proactively support the community.
- Plan rotas and schedules and arrange cover for absence as needed ensuring service levels are maintained.
- Ensure duties are covered to the agreed standard by team members and that duties are performed strictly in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures.
- Whilst on shift, manage the Control Room to always ensure staffed, and deal with emergencies and incidents.
- Act as the Incident Response Manager to all incidents, ranging from minor (fighting on campus) to major (fire). Responsible for managing an effective and coordinated response is carried out by the Security team on shift, delegating and instructing them as required depending on the nature of the incident. Ensure all incidents are logged and recorded and a detailed Incident Report is produced and circulated to key stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Ensure the effective collection and analysing of information and data through incident reports, witness statements, CCTV and bodycam footage with the intention of identifying how, where and why incidents occur. This data is to be centrally collated and routinely reviewed to influence the security service approach.
- Effective liaison with stakeholders and third parties (e.g., agency staffing or emergency services).
- Work with other Duty Managers and the Head of Campus Safety and Security to continually review and update standard operating procedures and other instructions.
- Encourage and promote a secure environment through your own conduct and behaviours, and that of the team by providing advice, guidance and support for all security related matters.
- Proactively engage and liaise with the community to promote the security service and safety advice and to gain feedback, attending college and flat rep meetings, student and staff events as required, and relaying this information to the Head of Campus Safety and Security as required.
- Continually develop a high performing team by creating annual training plans, individual development, coaching, and providing advice and guidance. Be the first line Investigating Officer in the event of any performance issues or complaints received about any security team member’s performance.
- Responsible for the onboarding and training of new members of staff within their team.
- Managing employee life cycle issues such as absence management, performance and conduct.
- Lead by example, ensuring that team members continually promote University values and behaviours by demonstrating excellence in performance, profile, conduct, and customer service.
- With the support of the Head of Campus Safety and Security, actively seek out opportunities to engage and positively contribute to university community and college activities.
- To undertake any other requirements commensurate with the seniority of the post/as required by the head of department.
