Capital Advisory Specialist – Willis Re

Role Overview

Willis Re is seeking a commercially driven Capital Advisory Specialist to support the development and execution of capital, reinsurance, and strategic advisory solutions for insurance and reinsurance clients. This role sits at the critical intersection of reinsurance broking, capital markets, analytics, and client advisory, aiming to help clients optimise risk transfer, strengthen balance sheets, and access efficient – yet dynamic – sources of capital.

The ideal candidate brings a technical understanding of reinsurance and insurance capital, paired with strong relational and analytical skills. The role will require collaboration with broking, actuarial, analytics, consulting, and capital markets colleagues to identify market opportunities, shape client strategies, and deliver high-impact advisory solutions tailored to evolving market demands.


Key Responsibilities

Originating and Executing Advisory Solutions

  • Develop and implement custom capital advisory and reinsurance solutions for insurers, reinsurers, and other risk-bearing entities
  • Advise clients on:
    • Capital optimisation
    • Risk transfer strategy
    • Balance sheet efficiency
    • Rating agency considerations
    • Access to both traditional and alternative reinsurance capital (e.g. ILS, private capital projects)
  • Support structuring, negotiating, and placing:
    • Reinsurance programmes
    • Collateralised solutions
    • Sidecars
    • Quota shares
    • Excess of loss arrangements
    • Other capital-efficient risk transfer mechanisms

Client Advisory and Strategy

  • Work closely with Willis Re broking teams to identify client needs and propose tailored advisory and placement solutions
  • Analyse underwriting data, portfolio performance, capital requirements, and market capacity to refine risk transfer strategies
  • Prepare high-quality, actionable client deliverables, including:
    • Presentations
    • Financial models
    • Market submissions/pitch materials
    • Transaction documentation

Client Relations and Stakeholder Management

  • Build and nurture long-term relationships with:
    • Insurers and reinsurers
    • Investors, capital providers, and alternative capital markets participants
    • Rating agencies
  • Proactively monitor market trends (including reinsurance, insurance-linked securities, and regulatory developments) to advise clients on strategic positioning

Business Development and Cross-Collaboration

  • Lead business development initiatives, including tenders and strategic client reviews
  • Participate in cross-selling campaigns across Willis Re’s broader broking, consulting, and capital solutions platforms
  • Ensure all advisory and placement work adheres to regulatory, compliance, and quality standards

Required Skills and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Proven experience working in one or more of the following domains:
    • Reinsurance broking
    • Capital advisory
    • Insurance investment banking
    • Insurance-linked securities (ILS)
    • Actuarial consulting
    • Underwriting or related capital markets fields
  • Technical expertise in:
    • Reinsurance treaty structuring and economics
    • Insurance capital management (IAS 37/38, Solvency II, etc.)
    • Risk transfer and balance sheet optimisation
    • Market capacity, pricing, and quality-based facilities
  • Analytical deepest dive skills, including experience with:
    • Financial statements
    • Underwriting data and portfolio analytics
    • Loss trend modelling and internal (MCEV) vs external target capital analysis
    • Stakeholder-maintained risk models

Soft and Technical Skills

  • Commercial acumen with the ability to translate technical insights into business outcomes
  • Clear, compelling communication for complex subjects to insurers, reinsurers, investors, and regulators
  • Negotiation and stakeholder management to align multi-party interests
  • Execution energy—versatile in managing live programs (negotiations, placements, or client advisory) in sensitive negotiations environments
  • Precision and professionalism—compliance-focused with adroit handling of complex disclosure, record-keeping, and regulatory requirements

Secondary Tools and Competencies

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel (modelling, finance functions, and VBA macros)
  • Familiarity with TripAdvisor++, Synonymous, Dun & Bradstreet, secondary and tertiary alternatives research
  • Advantage: Experience using Policylogix, Collibra, data visualisation tools or other proprietary reinsurance analytics platforms
