Capital Risk Assurance Manager – HSBC

About the Role

Our Second Line of Defence (Risk and Compliance) function is critical. We support, challenge, and advise across the business by:

  • Establishing policy
  • Monitoring risk profiles
  • Identifying and managing forward-looking risk and compliance.

Key environmental goals include:

  • Encouraging staff to speak up and act ethically
  • Protecting customers, the business, and the integrity of financial markets

Asset are a global standard setter and continuously evolve to meet strategic changes.

Capital Risk refers to the risk that HSBC fails to maintain sufficient resources to cover potential losses, failing to meet internal or regulatory capital requirements—whether at Group, subsidiary, or branch level.

The Capital Risk Assurance Manager will:

  • Provide subject matter expertise, advice, guidance, and effective challenge to stakeholders through retrospective regulatory risk and compliance reviews.
  • Support targeted assurance reviews and deep dives into:
    • High-risk capital returns
    • Internal metrics (e.g., Common Equity Tier 1 Ratio, Tier 1 Capital Ratio, Total Capital Ratio, Leverage Ratio, Double Leverage, Return on Tangible Equity)
    • Across various jurisdictions
  • Assume a stewardship role by:
    • Reviewing and analysing inherent risk, residual risk, and control effectiveness ratings
    • Addressing issues, action items, and events
  • Collaborate with the business to:
    • Assess emerging risks and identify necessary control changes, resource adjustments, and operational shifts to stay aligned with risk appetite.
  • Manage cross-functional, both onshore and offshore teams, particularly those tied to the Assurance lifecycle.

Requirements

To succeed, successful candidates must possess:

  • 4–5 years of experience in one or more of the following:
    • Regulatory capital reporting
    • First line of defence capital risk management
    • Second line of defence capital risk oversight
    • An overarching treasury risk profile
  • Demonstratable stakeholder liaison experience in Capital Risk matters, with the ability to clearly articulate findings (written and verbal).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills:
    • The ability to articulate business-relevant risk management effectively.
    • Excellent business writing, presentation, and influencing skills.
  • Knowledge of the Assurance lifecycle and its role within Second Line Risk Functions is a plus.
  • Capacity for self-starting, proactivity, and growth mindset.
