Night Training Support Worker – Paediatric Complex Care

Location: Birmingham (B11) Pay: £13/hour (day) | £13.50/hour (night) Shift Times: Days (09:00–16:00) | Nights (20:00–06:00)

About the Role

What the Role Involves

You will provide compassionate one-to-one support to a 6-year-old boy with a severe, progressive neurodegenerative condition, living at home with his family. Secondary support may be required at his grandparent’s home in the B11 area.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support in a family home environment (CCTV in place).
  • Clinical care for severe health needs, including:
    • GJ tube feeds & fluid administration (nutrition and hydration).
    • Epilepsy seizure awareness & management (experience essential).
    • Ketogenic diet management to control seizures.
    • Suctioning for respiratory support.
  • Gentle spycho-motor sensory stimulation for comfort and engagement.
  • Close partnership with the boy’s family, wider care team, and healthcare providers.

What You’ll Provide

Your role will centre around:

  • Building trust through warm, patient emotional support.
  • Empowering the family to deliver most care themselves while ensuring he receives reassuring one-to-one assistance.
  • Compassionate engagement—he responds well to cuddles, being held, music, and gentle interaction, particularly to the sound of Qurán.

About the Child

Born in the Covid-19 pandemic winter 2020, he is the third child of a close-knit, nurturing family. His condition has worsened dramatically in the past year:

Clinical Needs:

  • Dysphagia (swallowing difficulty).
  • Gut dysmotility.
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • Gastro-jejunostomy (GJ) tube dependency for full nutrition.
  • Epilepsy (experience with managing seizures essential).
  • Ketogenic diet required for seizure management.

Person Specification

Experience and Skills

  • Direct experience managing paediatric epilepsy (indispensable).
  • Strong clan-pathetic ability to connect with a vulnerable child.
  • Excellent communication with caring families and care teams.
  • Emotional resilience and ability to manage any challenging situations with professionalism.
