Support Worker – Complex Paediatric Care (1:1) | Birmingham

About the Role
We are seeking a compassionate, skilled, and dedicated Support Worker to provide one-to-one, high-quality care for a child with complex medical needs in their home environment. This is an opportunity to:
- Deliver person-centred support in a small, attuned household
- Work closely with a supportive, experienced family
- Play a crucial role in the child’s comfort, safety, and emotional wellbeing
About the Child
The child requires 24-hour specialist care due to a complex clinical profile:
Clinical Needs
- Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia
- Dystonia (managed with medication and escalation care plan)
- Seizures
- Choreoathetoid Involventary Movement Disorder
- Oxygen-dependent (up to 2L/min via nasal prongs)
- Requires:
- Regular oral and nasopharyngeal suction
- Daily chest physiotherapy
Personal Interests & Comforts
- Thrives on gentle, reassuring interaction (e.g., hand-holding)
- Engages in sensory and tactile play (fine and gross motor stimulation)
- Relaxes with music, children’s TV (e.g., Omar and Hana), or simple conversation
- Structures around predictability, calm, and familiarity—prefers home over school

Clinical Responsibilities
This role demands proven expertise in paediatric complex care to ensure safety and wellbeing. Key duties include:
Medical Management
- Safely administering oxygen therapy
- Performing aseptic oral and nasopharyngeal suction (competency assessed)
- Supporting chest physiotherapy routines
- Monitoring and responding to dystonia/failed rigid-dystonic episodes (per care plans)
- Seizure recognition and first-aid intervention
- Administering prescriptive oral medication
- Accurate, timely documentation & record-keeping
All clinical tasks must be assessed and signed off by our clinical team before undertaking.
Health & Safety Considerations
The child has a history of recurrent chest infections and significant PICU admissions—high-risk context demanding vigilance.
Critical Health Alert: Multiple Severe Allergies
- Anaphylaxis risk: May require immediate EpiPen administration. Allergies:
- Egg
- Chicken
- All dairy products
- Epimax paraffin-free ointment (must be completely avoided)
Compliance with strict allergen protocols is essential; adherence recorded daily.
Daily Care Support Tasks
We’re looking for someone who will bring a patient, nurturing presence—this child thrives on intimacy within a calm routine:
- Fingering all interactions through gentle reassurance or comfortable touch
- Collaborating with highly experienced carers (parents) to meet child’s evolving needs
- Engaging with sensory, tactile or simple communication-based play to support emotional wellbeing
- Ensuring safe, tailored positioning adjustments to address comfort
- Building strong rapport with siblings/relatives to minimise transitions
- Maintaining adherence to personne-focused lifestyle activities

Essential Qualifications & Skills
Core Criteria
✔ Previous experience in paediatric complex care (highly preferential) ✔ Basic Life Support (Adult first-aid up to CPD level 4) certification (essential) ✔ Manual Handling Diploma (preferably at CPD level 4 or equivalent) ✔ Up-to-date National Insurance Number ✔ Willingness to self-fund a DBS (Check & Clear completion). (Costs incurred by candidate.) ✔ Health Declaration signed by doctor (notarized if overseas medical certification required)
