Caretaker/Gardener – Permanent, Full-Time
Oxford High School, Oxford, Oxfordshire
Salary: £27,171 plus benefits Working Pattern: Full-time (36-hour week, five days per week), including early, late, and occasional weekend shifts with flexibility required to support school events and lettings.

About the Role
Oxford High School is seeking a reliable, proactive, and hardworking Caretaker/Gardener to uphold stringent standards across our school premises and grounds. This essential role is pivotal in ensuring a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Site & Security
- Assist in securing school premises by locking/unlocking buildings and managing alarms and surveillance systems.
- Monitor external areas, the gym, and swimming pool for security.
- Support maintenance of access systems, locks, and keys.
Premises Maintenance
- Perform general repairs and maintenance of buildings, furniture, and equipment.
- Help with planned preventative maintenance and respond promptly to emergency repairs.
- Monitor heating, lighting, water systems, and fire alarms.
- Maintain safety records for checks and inspections.
Grounds & Gardening
- Maintain landscape areas, lawns, hedges, planned areas, and sports fields across sites.
- Conduct mowing, pruning, planting, watering, weeding, and seasonal garden maintenance.
- Ensure grounds are free from litter and vegetation debris.
- Keep gardening equipment in good working order.
- Collaborate in designing and developing attractive planting schemes.

Health & Safety
- Adhere to health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and evacuation protocols.
- Assist with fire safety checks and site safety routines.
- Support waste management, site cleanliness, and provide emergency first aid (if qualified).
General Duties
- Assist with porterage, deliveries, and event setups.
- Provide support for school functions, lettings, and Open Days.
- Cultivate strong relationships with staff, pupils, parents, and contractors.
- Train and assist with minibus driving (upon completing training).
About You
- Practical experience in maintenance and gardening.
- Organised, dependable, and detail-oriented with the ability to work independently.
- Strong work ethic to maintain high standards across the school environment.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Flexibility to accommodate occasional evening or weekend duties.
- Preference will be given to candidates holding a valid driving licence (desirable but not compulsory).
