Caretaker / Handyperson - Business Support

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The Role
Band 2 roles are not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa routes.
All other roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHSGGC can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where the required criteria are met.
Caretaker/Maintenance Assistant
The Caretaker/Maintenance Assistant is responsible for providing an effective maintenance and portering service, ensuring that the environment is kept clean and hazard-free. They are responsible for general maintenance duties and minor new works. After initial induction and on-the-job training to allow them to carry out these duties, the postholder will work with little supervision, although guidance and assistance are available from a supervisor/line manager on a daily basis.
The postholder has a responsibility for building security and may be required to:
- Open and lock up own base premises
- Cover other premises within the South Sector during periods of leave
Liaison is required with internal departments, external contractors, General Practitioners (GPs), and all users of the premises.
No formal qualifications are required as on-the-job training and induction will be provided. However, the candidate must demonstrate:
- Competence in carrying out minor works
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to follow protocols and prioritise workload
- Flexibility in approach

Desirable:

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Salary: Pro rata for part-time hours
- Contract: Permanent, part-time (13.9 hours per week)
- Location: Based at Castlemilk Health Centre
- Shift pattern:
- Monday: 4pm–6.30pm
- Tuesday: 4pm–6.30pm
- Wednesday: 4pm–6.30pm
- Thursday: 4.06pm–8pm (potential to change to 7pm finish)
- Friday: 4pm–6.30pm
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the premises remain secure and lockfast
- Inform the Police and CHP Administrator of any unauthorised personnel causing damage or issues
- Report any loss or damage promptly to the Administrator
- Keep the entrance grounds and building clean and tidy
- Carry out minor works (e.g., changing lamps, clearing blocked toilets, erecting shelving, minor plaster and painting tasks)
- Report any works/maintenance outside your remit to the appropriate body and ensure completion
- Check and distribute received goods/stores to the respective departments or central storage areas
- Set up rooms for clinics and meetings
- Organise incoming and outgoing mail (sorting and/or distributing)
- Remove waste and spillages in accordance with the NHS G&C Risk Management Policy Guidelines
Knowledge, Training, Qualifications and/Experience Required to Do the job:
Essential:
- Competent in carrying out minor works safely
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ability to follow work area protocols and engage in reviews
- Proficiency in prioritising workloads, exercising initiative, and making decisions when required
- Flexibility in work tasks
Desirable:
- Previous experience in caretaking, minor maintenance, or portering
- Skilled or semi-skilled experience within the building industry
- Keyboard skills and data input experience

Training:
New employees will undergo an induction/training programme, with a minimum duration of 4 weeks (depending on the department and location).
