Caretaker / Handyperson - Business Support

Caretaker/Maintenance Assistant

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) One of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing 40,000+ staff across clinical and non-clinical roles.


About the Role

  • Band 2 Staff: Not eligible for Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa sponsorship.
  • Other roles assessed based on Home Office immigration requirements. A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) will only be issued if eligible.

The Caretaker/Maintenance Assistant ensures a clean, safe, and hazard-free environment at the Gorbals Health & Care Centre. Responsibilities include:

  • General maintenance & portering duties
  • Minor new work & repairs (e.g. furniture assembly, lighting, partitioning)
  • Security duties (locking/unlocking premises when needed)
  • Liaison with internal teams, contractors, GPs, and building users

Initial training provided, but candidates must demonstrate competence in minor tasks. Work requires little supervision, but managers are available for support.


Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Caretaking

  • Perform minor works (lamps, starters, shelving, wall washing, minor painting/plastering)
  • Clear blocked toilets/sinks
  • Set up clinics, meeting rooms
  • Collect/distribute mail & stores

Safety & Compliance

  • Secure premises & entrance grounds
  • Report damage, unauthorised access, or spills to CHP Administrator
  • Ensure worse waste disposal aligns with NHS risk policies

Administrative Functions

  • Distribute stores & goods to departments
  • Input data (desirable)
  • Follow NHS G&C protocols with discretion

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Competence in minor maintenance tasks (on-the-job training provided)
  • Good written/verbal communication
  • Teamwork & initiative
  • Priority management & decision-making
  • Flexibility to adapt workload

Desirable

  • Experience in caretaking, portering, or maintenance (especially in healthcare settings)
  • Building industry skills (characterized/semi-skilled)
  • Keyboard/data input proficiency (e.g. payroll, booking systems)

Duration, Location & Working Pattern

  • Time: Permanent (part-time)
  • Hours: 14.5 hours/week (pro-rata pay)
  • Venue: Gorbals Health & Care Centre
  • Shift Hours:
    • Mon–Wed, Fri: 7:00 am–9:45 am
    • Thu: 7:00 am–10:30 am
