Caretaker Position – Northampton Schools Account, The Duston School
Fixed Term Contract (6 months) | £13.72 per hour | 37.5-hour shift-based role
Join a vibrant and inclusive community in Northampton Schools, delivering critical services that make a real positive impact across the UK. We are seeking a dedicated Caretaker to support Amey—the local partner managing facilities for 42 Northampton schools—ensuring safe, clean, and compliant learning environments for students and staff.
Work flexible shifts weekly between 7:00 am & 7:00 pm, ensuring seamless 24/7 services with minimal disruption.
About the Role
Support the safe and efficient operation of school premises by performing a range of maintenance and security tasks, while helping to reduce environmental impact through strategic sustainability efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the smooth running of school premises, contributing to a positive and efficient learning environment.
- Conduct day-to-day DIY and minor maintenance repair work, including furniture, fixtures, wall repairs, and minor building issues.
- Maintain heating, lighting, and alarm systems, ensuring they are operational and compliant.
- Perform duties of responsibility to secure buildings, including:
- Locking doors and windows when the premises are not in use.
- Regular checks to prevent vandalism and unlawful entry.
- Assembling/clearing chairs/tables for meetings, assemblies, or events.
- Carry out litter picking and general clearing of external and indoor areas.
Unique Aspects of This Role: This position directly impacts the efficient operation of the school, supporting educational continuity and learner safety. It involves working towards zero carbon objectives, ensuring activities are delivered in a lean and sustainable manner while compliant with health and safety standards.

What We’re Looking For
- Proven practical DIY and maintenance skills (minor repairs).
- Ability to perform independently but also work effectively in a team with school staff and colleagues.
- Flexibility with shift-based work (rotating schedules).
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, supporting positive interactions with clients and coworkers.
- Commitment to health & safety standards, safeguarding, and Amey’s zero-carbon initiatives.
- Previous experience in similar school or facility caretaking roles is advantageous.
