Carpenter (Fixed Term Contract)
Location: Great Western Hospital, Swindon, SN3 6BB
Salary: £16.41 per hour
Contract: 6 months Fixed Term Contract, 37.5 hours per week (7.5 hours/day, Monday–Friday)
About the Role

As a Carpenter in our Health team at Great Western Hospital, you’ll play a hands-on role in maintaining the building fabric that keeps essential healthcare environments running safely and smoothly. Your work ensures that colleagues, patients, and visitors experience safe, well-maintained spaces every day.
You’ll support work that directly impacts patient care and the wider community by maintaining critical hospital facilities, ensuring resilience, safety, and pride in service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll be entrusted with the following duties:
- Carry out reactive repairs, fault-finding, servicing, commissioning, and maintenance of plant, equipment, and services across the hospital.
- Complete planned preventive maintenance for a broad range of plant and equipment.
- Use various carpentry tools and electrical saws confidently and safely.
- Undertake fire door maintenance, inspections, and fire-stopping tasks.
- Support additional duties within your competence and skill set.
- Work in line with all relevant Serco policies, workplace regulations, and best practice guidelines.
- Proactively contribute to health and safety system review and working practice development.
- Work responsibly regarding personal and collective safety at all times.
- Attend work in line with the Computerised Time and Attendance System.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
- Work additional hours where reasonably requested in exceptional circumstances.
- Communicate faults, defects, or parts requirements to supervisors or managers.
- Attend on-site and off-site training as required.
- Understand how your work supports the project’s and company-wide objectives.
- Take on Authorised Person duties (e.g., working at height or in confined spaces) when trained.
- Support painting and decorating tasks as necessary.
- Work shifts or overtime when required.
- Follow the initial alternating schedule: Monday–Friday, 07:00–15:30.

Ideal Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- Completion of a recognised Carpentry Apprenticeship or relevant structured training programme.
- City & Guilds and/or BTEC certification(s).
- Proven experience in a similar environment.
- Knowledge and understanding of building services.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
Vetting & Compliance: An Enhanced DBS check is required (including spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and local police information). You’ll also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire for support needs assessment.
