Day One Caseworker – Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle)
About the Role
To deliver the Day One Casework bedside model to patients—or those closest to them—impacted by serious or multiple injuries with life-changing consequences (e.g., disability or death) within the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). Support will be provided across:
- Rehabilitation wards
- On-site clinics
- External settings (e.g., rehabilitation centres)
The role includes:
- Maintaining a visible physical presence within the Trust, embedding with clinical teams focussed on major trauma pathways
- Facilitating outpatient and in-person legal clinics
- Delivering support in the immediate aftermath of major trauma, linking families with early legal and rehabilitation services
Aiding in building stakeholder relationships to promote Day One services and address needs within the NHS and wider community.
Responsibilities consist of partnership work, case management, data handling, advocacy, and operational coordination to ensure seamless support for patients and families.
Core Responsibilities
Case Management & Direct Support
- Work closely with NHS clinical staff and community/voluntary organisations to assess and address the needs of patients and their loved ones following serious injury.
- Implement a case management approach, including:
- Initial assessments of needs
- Signposting to appropriate resources
- Direct referrals and facilitation of support
- Provide consistent assessments for all individuals, regardless of injury cause, age, or status.
- Ensure timely specialist legal advice is available, supporting rehabilitation and NHS cost recovery.

Administrative & Data Collection
- Maintain detailed case records using Day One’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, in compliance with data protection and NHS policies.
- Contribute to quality improvement by:
- Writing case studies and narratives
- Gathering patient and family feedback
- Supporting monitoring and evaluation of services
- Generate reports for both internal and external stakeholders.
Awareness & External Engagement
- Deliver awareness-raising presentations to clinical colleagues and departments.
- Organise and facilitate outpatient and in-person legal clinic drop-ins.
- Strengthen relationships across the regional major trauma network to ensure eligible individuals access Day One support.
- Collaborate with local authorities, statutory, and voluntary organisations to deliver advocates and continuity of care.

Support & Supervision
- Support the discharge process and transition to external settings, working with NHS staff.
- Assist in recruiting and supervising Day One volunteers where required.
- Partner with Day One’s Peer Support Service to promote awareness and engagement.
Organisational & Infrastructure
- Contribute to performance, safety, quality, and effectiveness of all services.
- Uphold safeguarding policies in daily work.
- Collaborate with the Fundraising and Communications team in raising national and regional awareness.
- Prepare for travel throughout the region (including national meetings) and occasional travel as needed.
Professional Development & Governance
- Comply with mandatory training, including NHS Trust and Day One-specific programmes.
- Engage in monthly reflective practice sessions under external clinical supervision to maintain professional boundaries.
