About the Role

The caseworker will be working in a unique Black led charity whose aim is to use the law to dismantle systemic racism to improve the lived experience of members of Black communities across the UK. The post is funded via a grant from the Legal Education Foundation.

About You

You will be someone with a strong understanding of race discrimination as well as knowledge of other areas of legal practice which are relevant to BEO, such as human rights, judicial review.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible along with the Director of Legal Services and Policy of delivering high quality specialist legal advice across race and intersecting areas of discrimination in a wide range of social welfare subjects.

You will specifically support individuals who have experienced race discrimination by undertaking casework up to and including representation at times. Casework will be delivered via legal clinics and workshops. You will be involved in identifying and working on strategic litigation cases that have a wide systemic impact.

You will support BEO partner community organisations by delivering advice as a second-tier advisor, to locally based community organisations who are trusted to provide support to members of Black communities.

You will work with BEO’s communications, research and policy colleagues to develop and deliver accessible legal education resources.

Caseworker duties:

  • Provide specialist legal advice, guidance, and representation, where appropriate, to individuals who have experienced racial discrimination and related forms of intersecting discrimination, helping them achieve agreed outcomes.
  • Provide 2nd tier advice to partner organisations.
  • Manage your own caseload, with supervision from the Director of Legal Services and Policy, dealing with inquiries from members of Black communities and via legal clinics, and referral partners.
  • Work with case selection criteria and with the Strategic Litigation Advisory Board.
  • Collaborate with partner organisations in strategic litigation cases.
  • Build and maintain referral pathways and referral partners.
  • Ensure the highest standards of client care by working and behaving in a professional manner and to the highest standards of the legal profession.
  • Comply with case management systems, administrative procedures and quality standards as required by funding bodies and by BEO.
