Part-Time Teaching Assistant (Seminars) – Department of Theology and Religion, Durham University
About the University & Role

- Postgraduate research students who have upgraded to doctoral status (or expect to have done so by 01 October 2026) and are in their second, third, or fourth year in 2026/27.
- Part-time teachers who are no longer registered students but have prior teaching experience within the department.
Teaching may be available for Level 1 modules, including:
- THEO1131 Worldview, Faith and Identity
- THEO1171 Introduction to the History of Christianity
- THEO1191 Introduction to Christian Theology
- THEO1931 Introduction to the Bible
Primary responsibilities include:
- Assisting Module Convenors in planning, preparing, and leading seminars.
- Potentially attending weekly lectures (depending on module requirements).
- Enhancing skills in teaching, discussion facilitation, and session preparation.
Special note: Full-time students are advised to work no more than 15 hours per week per University guidelines.
Payment & Reimbursement
Pay rate: £17.16 to £19.01 per hour (Grade 6 spine point 22–26, dependent on teaching experience within the department).
Payment terms: Remaining payments will be made for: ✔ Seminars led (contact hours). ✔ Preparation time (per different session). ✔ Repeat preparation time (as outlined in HR teaching-related pay guidance).

Training & Commitments
- New part-time teaching assistants must attend Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) training modules.
- All Teaching Assistants are required to complete mandatory University e-learning courses.
- Departmental training sessions (scheduled at the start of each academic year) are mandatory.

Under direction and after relevant training, responsibilities include:
- Maintaining knowledge of the subject area.
- Planning, preparing, and teaching seminars as instructed by the department.
- Monitoring attendance via class registers.
- Developing and updating syllabus materials and supporting curriculum activities.
- Contributing to Learning & Teaching (L&T) materials.
- Undertaking formative marking per published criteria.
- Providing written and/or oral feedback to students as required by the department.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Current or recently completed postgraduate research (PhD candidate in the second to fourth year, or having upgraded by 1 October 2026).
- Published track record of teaching within the Department of Theology and Religion.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience (or willingness to develop) academic expertise in relevant module areas.
- Willingness to collaborate closely with Module Convenors and follow their guidance.
- Self-directed initiative and ability to prepare independently.
- Willingness to complete mandatory training, including formal evaluations (default annual observations & student feedback).
