As a Community Support Worker, you’ll help those you support achieve these goals through personalised, compassionate assistance in activities like work, education, daily living, social engagement, and more.
The Role
This is a dynamic and rewarding casual opportunity. Your daily tasks will evolve based on individuals’ unique needs and aspirations, but you’ll focus on:
- Personal empowerment: Encouraging independence and confidence
- Community participation: Assisting with social, educational, or recreational activities
- Daily living support: Facilitating care routines, hygiene, and practical self-care
- Motivational support: Offering encouragement to achieve personal goals
You’ll work closely with individuals, their families, and our dedicated team to create tailored plans that ensure safety, growth, and happiness.
Key Responsibilities
Your work will depend on the needs of those you support, but may include:
- Assisting individuals with tasks that promote independence (e.g., meal prep, shopping, laundry)
- Twenty-four-seven support, including day, evening, and overnight shifts, as well as weekends
- Caregiver tasks: Physical or personal care based on individual requirements
- Connection-building: Increasing social involvement and community engagement
- Flexibility: Adapting your approach to scenarios as diverse as behaviours of concern, medical needs, or learning disabilities
- Collaboration: Teamwork with nurses, carers, and healthcare providers to ensure coordinated care

Essential Skills & Experience
Your role requires a unique blend of empathy, resilience, and adaptability. All roleholders must:
- Be passionate about helping people overcome daily challenges, with a particular focus on building ordinary lives for those with disabilities
- Flex your energy to engage with individuals in whatever capacity they’re on—energetic or still—notably for shifts requiring high activity levels
- Stay calm and composed while handling unpredictable or emotional situations, remaining professional and supportive
- Uphold safety boundaries by using resilience to guide individuals effectively without compromising actions that could pose risks
- Communicate clearly: Strong verbal and written English skills are non-negotiable. Be adept at explaining needs and advocating for others
- Support motivation and care: Passionate about learning, self-improvement, and personal growth alongside those you support
- Master organised chaos: Be able to juggle multiple tasks and priorities within a shifting environment
Experienced Candidates Benefit From
- Having worked previously as a Community Support Worker, dealing with disabilities (physical or intellectual) or behaviours of concern (challenging behaviours)
- Prior experience in mental health support or healthcare—though Spectrum will train newcomers competitively
Must-Have Attributes
- New Zealand driver’s license (we may require your own vehicle)
- Pass NZ Police Clearance Check—we prioritise safety and trust
- Tech-adept: fluency with basic software and tools like Word, Internet Explorer, and email (and digital platforms for care plans if needed)
- Reliability and commitment: Showing up consistently to shifts of varying start/end times, including non-traditional hours
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
Though experience isn’t mandatory, we strongly encourage:
- Completing a Level 3 qualification (or above) in Community Support—we’ll support you in achieving this while working with us
- Diagnostic or therapeutic aptitude: If you’re familiar with, or interested in learning services tailored to behaviours of concern, mental health, or complex needs
- Ability to encounter discomfort but maintain focus on your values and goals

Non-Resident Requirements
If you’re a Permanent resident of New Zealand but not a resident for statutory/incomes tax purposes, you’ll need to meet Immigration NZ стандарт‘ level 3 criteria:
- 3+ years working in the care sector, at least earning the care workforce wage rate, OR
- A relevant qualification from an approved framework (NZQCF):
- Level 4+ qualifications for level 3 roles,
- Or a diploma for level 2 roles
