About This Role
A specialised opportunity at the heart of ecommerce expansion. As Category Manager – Ecommerce Retail, you’ll shape commercial strategies to drive performance, bridge gaps between channels, and future-proof growth.
You’ll spearhead category planning for Tier 1 retailers, while empowering teams to work effectively with Tier 2/3 accounts. With a forward-thinking focus on emerging channels like Quick Commerce and Aggregators, you’ll integrate commercial best practices with cutting-edge ecommerce technology and data-driven insights.
This is a high-visibility, execution-focused role: turning data into action, fostering cross-functional partnerships, and driving momentum in digital retail landscapes.

Key Accountabilities
Drive Ecommerce Category Leadership with Tier 1 Retailers
- Craft tailored, insight-driven category plans to accelerate growth with priority retail accounts.
- Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, and Category Growth teams to embed data-driven recommendations into Joint Business Plans (JBPs).
- Act as a ecommerce strategy partner for retailers, handling bespoke projects and complex briefings.
- Launch test-and-learn initiatives to optimize digital media ROI and refine ecommerce shopper journeys.
Build Activation Capability for Tier 2 & 3 Customers
- Design actionable activation toolkits and training programs to empower retail managers in execution.
- Create systems, data-driven processes, and reporting tools to optimize ecommerce capabilities.
- Ensure cross-channel strategy alignment and measurable business growth.
Own Category Strategy for Pureplay Retailers
- Develop niche, high-impact strategies for online-first rivals—leveraging digital analytics and deep shopper behavior insights.
- Drive excellence in media selection, assortment planning, and execution.
Shape Growth in Quick Commerce & Aggregator Channels
- Spot emerging opportunities in fast-evolving channels like Aggregator Platforms and Direct-to-Consumer models.
- Build frameworks for commercial engagement, resource prioritization, and high-velocity channel pilots.
Lead Thinking on Ecommerce Technology and Retail Media
- Remain the internal technology steward, evaluating AI and retail media advancements.
- Translate research into actionable strategies and thought leadership for McCain’s Commercial leadership.
Requirements
- 3–5 Years’ Experience: In Category Management, Ecommerce, Digital Trading, or Data Analytics—with a focus on FMCG/CPG or ecommerce retail environments.
- Proven Growth Track Record: Hands-on experience executing brick-and-mortar or online strategies for impactful category growth.
- Analytical Strength: Competency interpreting and applying data from Kantar, dunnhumby, IRI/Nielsen, and ecommerce partners.
- Communication & Persuasion: Ability to distill complex findings into convincing, team-ready insights.
- Collaboration Expertise: Proven success in cross-functional work and stakeholder engagement, leveraging McCain’s ecommerce data teams and retail partners.

Location & Work Model
McCain welcomes hybrid working for full-time office roles. At least half of working time should include in-office collaboration at our Customer Experience Centre in Scarborough, which is:
- 1.5-hour commute from Leeds City Centre
- ~1-hour commute from York
- Travel support and flexibility are standard.
