Location: Birmingham (Flexible UK Locations Considered) Salary: Competitive + Excellent Benefits + Flexible Working

The Opportunity

LOBA Group is proud to partner with a global design, engineering, and consultancy firm to recruit an experienced CDM Principal Designer & Construction Safety Consultant.

Join an accomplished and expanding Design & Construction Safety team, providing Principal Designer services across some of the UK’s most technically demanding and high-profile projects. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams—architects, engineers, and technical specialists—to embed safety into the design process, ensuring compliance with CDM 2015. Influence projects from initial concept to final delivery.

Support a diverse range of projects including commercial, infrastructure, public sector, industrial, utilities, and major development, with career growth and exposure to complex schemes.

The Role

As a CDM Principal Designer & Construction Safety Consultant, you will provide expert health and safety guidance throughout the entire design lifecycle. Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering Principal Designer services in alignment with CDM 2015.
  • Advising clients, designers, and contractors on their statutory objectives.
  • Conducting design reviews and promoting the Principles of Prevention.
  • Evaluating and refining Designers’ Risk Assessments.
  • Compiling Pre-Construction Information.
  • Creating and reviewing Health & Safety Files.
  • Conducting site inspections, design audits, and compliance reviews.
  • Assessing contractor safe systems of work and construction methodologies.
  • Supporting multidisciplinary design teams in complex engineering and building projects.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders, including clients, contractors, planning authorities, Health & Safety Executive, Environment Agency, Network Rail, and more.
  • Facilitating CDM workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Cultivating long-term client relationships and uncovering growth opportunities.

About You

We seek construction safety professionals with proven experience in CDM Principal Designer roles across the built environment or engineering fields.

Essential criteria include:

  • A degree, diploma, or associated qualification in Engineering, Architecture, Construction, or a related discipline.
  • Membership of a recognised institution, such as ICE, CIOB, RIBA, IMechE, or equivalent.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate/Diploma (or equivalent body certification).
  • Affiliation to APS, IOSH, or another Health & Safety certification body.
  • 3-7 years’ experience delivering CDM services on building or engineering projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations.
  • Confidence in design risk reviews and ability to influence project teams.
  • Strong grasp of construction site safety, risk assessments, inspections, and safe systems of work.
  • Experience in reviewing contractor compliance and conducting audits.
  • Leadership and transparency in challenging technical teams and communicating complex concepts.
  • An advantage would be knowledge of Building Regulations.
