About The Role
The role is a senior designer within the IP Networks team which is responsible for the design of networks supporting both our broadband services and specialist services for media and broadcast companies, as well as supporting BT’s Consumer TV services. This role is the overall design authority for CDN solutions across BT’s, EE’s and Plusnet’s broadband and mobile services and the distribution of content across all ISPs. The role holder is responsible for complex design and working with wider BT teams to create new products and services, maintain and improve customer experience, simplify and consolidate our CDN functions and deliver strategic transformation using cloud technologies and agile methodologies.
You will also be expected to share your expertise and learning with other teams, offering consultancy to spread transformational “wins” within your team to other teams in the organization.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Delivers resolutions to problems that tend to be complex, cross-domain or of high impact to customers.
- Identifies opportunities to improve standards of practice within a project, continuously enhancing ways of working.
- Provides sound technical expertise to consult on significant component(s) of a technical solution within a specific domain or cross domain.
- Provides technical quality assurance over work of other engineers through matrix team structure.
- Creates and implements technical solutions for a domain or cross domains / portfolios of work within a specific technology area autonomously, understanding how solutions impact systems internally and/or externally and assessing impact of change.
- Designs, tests and deploys CDN solutions for BT’s own TV and third party content, including software development and additional innovative capabilities.
- Operate as a technical expert within multiple squads and tribes, acting as a design authority whilst, supporting squads and enabling increase pace in delivery.
- Develops design patterns across CDN and associated domains.
Essential Skills / Experience

- Technology design - You partner with the business to understand and analyze user requirements and inform the architecture design for software, systems and networks.
- Technology excellence - You build and apply insight into emerging technology to develop and deliver new digital solutions. You break complex information down into understandable language.
- Be agile - You identify opportunities to use collaborative approaches and continuous improvement. You contribute to projects as a subject matter expert or content owner.
- Proven the ability to develop complex solution designs, creating innovative solutions to new problems, including the introduction of cutting-edge technologies for the first time and spanning multiple domains in a critical service provider environment.
- Expertise across a range of disciplines including software development, IP networking, cloud/server infrastructure, broadband, mobile and TV distribution technologies. Able to develop both end-to-end solution designs and detailed designs for specific CDN/edge compute capabilities.
- Knowledge and experience of on-premise and public cloud deployments.
- Commercial acumen including appreciation of capital and operational budgets and ability to develop effective business cases.
- Strong communication skills and proven ability to influence others across the business to agree Solutions which deliver excellent customer experience and margin for BT.
- Taught your team how to do their roles more effectively.
- Aligned project plans and objectives with BT strategy and values.
- Made decisions in ambiguous situations using incomplete information or differing opinions (e.g. divided team loyalties or unclear deliverables).
- Been a spokesperson for others on issues of integrity.
- To suit the needs of a customer, colleague or client; moved outside of expected process or practice.
- Actively participated in strategy setting sessions.
- Showcased expertise on a project or a specific piece of work or led a project outside of the core areas of your expertise.
- Collaborated on a new project with a recognised expert.
- Experience of leading design communities in complex carrier/service provider/web scale networks.
- Experience of agile ways of working, for example as a squad member, scrum master or product owner.
- Experience of supporting RFPs, Vendor Selection and business case development.
- Experience of project management and/or solution architecture.

- Knowledge of TCP/IP protocol stack, including RADIUS and SNMP.
- Software experience (Python, Ansible, Git, Podman/Docker, VMs, CICD pipelines).
- Networking fundamentals (BGP, Vlans, IP addressing).
- Presentation of ideas to external audience.
