Cemetery Operative
About The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and professional Cemetery Operative to join our team. This role involves carrying out cemetery work, including grave digging and general maintenance of Worting Road Cemetery, and other cemeteries within the borough. You will play a vital part in ensuring our cemeteries are maintained to the highest standards, providing a respectful and supportive service to the community.
Main Responsibilities
- Undertake grave digging, grounds maintenance and landscaping using a variety of plant, machinery, and hand tools in line with quality standards and work instructions.
- Complete memorial safety testing in accordance with the agreed five-year schedule and provide detailed reports to the Cemetery Manager.
- Maintain good customer relationships and represent the council in a professional and compassionate manner.
- Ensure council vehicles and equipment are checked, maintained, and operated in line with legislation and best practice.
- Comply with all cemetery legislation, health and safety requirements, and council policies.

What We’re Looking For
- Good customer care skills with the ability to empathise in a respectful and sympathetic manner.
- A good level of fitness and mobility to undertake manual handling duties in all weather conditions.
- Ability to operate a range of hand tools and small plant equipment.
- Certification to operate plant machinery (e.g., excavators and dumpers) and, for qualified operatives, safe use of chemicals in line with legislation.
