Cemetery Worker

Grade 5 £29,064 – £32,061 (bar at £31,022) per annum pro rata + 6.7% flexibility payment

Location: Blackley Cemetery and Crematorium, Victoria Ave, Manchester, M9 8PJ

Working Hours: 35 hours per week, 8:00am – 4:00pm, including weekend working on a rota basis

Contract Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Closing Date: 20th of July 2026.

Bereavement Services deliver in the region of 3,000 burial and cremation services each year in the Council's five cemeteries and one crematorium. The Cemetery Worker role sits within the Infrastructure Team which provides cemetery and crematorium management and delivery of the burial and cremation services and grounds maintenance function for five cemeteries within Bereavement Services.

Our client is seeking a dedicated and flexible Cemetery Worker to support the delivery of burial, cremation, grounds maintenance, horticultural, and memorial safety services across Manchester’s cemeteries and crematorium sites.

This varied role involves preparing graves for burials, operating cremators, maintaining cemetery grounds, carrying out memorial safety inspections, and providing support during funeral and cremation services. The successful candidate will deliver a sensitive, professional, and customer-focused service to bereaved families, funeral directors, visitors, and other stakeholders.

The role requires the safe operation of vehicles, machinery, and equipment including diggers, mowers, and power tools. Candidates must hold a full, clean driving licence and be willing to work across multiple sites as required.

Working primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, the post holder will demonstrate strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, while contributing to community engagement initiatives, environmental sustainability, and biodiversity projects.

Key Requirements:

  • Experience of grounds maintenance, horticulture, or operational outdoor work.
  • Ability to work sensitively and professionally with bereaved families and funeral directors.
  • Experience using vehicles, machinery, and powered equipment safely.
  • Good teamwork, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Commitment to health and safety, continuous learning, and service improvement.
  • Full, clean driving licence.
