- Job Title: CESR Fellow in Ophthalmology
- Contract Type: Fixed term (12 months in the first instance)
- Duration: Based on training progression, extendable up to 36 months
- Primary Purpose: Structured training, supervised clinical development, and CESR portfolio generation.
- Appointment confirmed subject to: Satisfactory progress and adherence to specialty training requirements.
This post provides meaningful clinical experience while prioritising structured training in alignment with the CESR route, including:
- Weekly teaching and supervision
- Workplace-based assessments & appraisals
- Portfolio-based evidence gathering
- Rotation through 6-month subspecialty placements (e.g., clinics, theatre, laser/injection sessions, OCT, emergency ophthalmology).
About the Role
We are inviting applications for two flagship CESR Fellow positions in Ophthalmology at the UK’s largest acute ophthalmic teaching service. These roles are ideal for doctors aiming to progress via the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) pathway.
Key Features
✅ Structured support from a named Educational Supervisor & CESR Lead ✅ Broad subspecialty exposure during rotations (e.g., cataract, glaucoma, retinal disorders, orbital surgery, paediatric ophthalmology) ✅ Integration into on-call coverage alongside Senior House Officers ✅ Alignment with UK specialty curriculum standards and GPET (General Professional Test) requirements ✅ Access to upon completion (with potential for extension post-progress)
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Core clinical exposure (rotating according to subspecialty placement):
- Attendance at specialist clinics (including pre- and post-operative consultations)
- Participation in theatre lists (cataract surgeries, vitrectomy, corneal transplants, etc.)
- Laser treatments, injectable therapies (e.g., anti-VEGF), andوقفاءة فورية interference
- Attendance at eye casualty/emergency ophthalmology sessions
- Administrative and administrative tasks (They are patient notes, diaries, handovers)
- Weekly teaching sessions, including ward rounds, seminars, and skills-based courses

Training and progress-related actions
✔ Engagement in workplace-based assessments (WBA) (e.g., case-based discussions, multi-source feedback) ✔ Bi-annual appraisals and clinical supervision for qualified coaching ✔ Active portfolio development for CESR submission (written clinical assessments, training reports, and practice-based competency logs)
Incumbency requirements

Requirements & Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Experience
🔹 MBBS or equivalent medical qualification 🔹 Full GMC registration with an active licence to practice 🔹 Demonstrated ability to apply sound clinical judgement 🔹 Commitment to evidence-based practice and continuing professional development
Desirable Qualifications & Experience

Contractual Arrangements
- Appointment is on P,I or/ya providers to AIS nota consenten medical belonging grade and commensurate nodal pay on etapas
- Agency for mantle duties may require entry for weekend relief or late shifts.
Eligibility Criteria Scheduling
- Basic salary at Nodal Grade 5, contingent on:
- ✅ Minimum 6 years post-specialty/undergraduate training
- ✅ Proof of higher specialty certification (e.g., FRCP Framingham, FRCA, FRCS) – if earlier graduates are successful
- ✅ align with GPET Standards
