Chair Sought | Society of Designer Craftsmen | Voluntary | Closes 15 August
The UK's oldest craft society — founded 1887, Walter Crane and William Morris among its early presidents — is looking for its next Chair.
This is not a figurehead role.
The SDC has spent two years in deliberate renewal. Strategy is set. The hard thinking is done. What's needed now is someone with the experience and confidence to build on those foundations — and the first thing they'll do is appoint a new Executive Director.
What the role offers:
- Real strategic influence over a nationally significant cultural organisation
- The chance to shape a hire (Executive Director) that will define the next decade
- A platform in the UK craft and creative industries sector
- A committed, skilled Council ready to be led

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
What we're looking for:
- Charity governance experience, ideally at board level
- Financial acuity — particularly around organisational sustainability
- Leadership and people management at senior level
- Comfort as an ambassador and external spokesperson
- A genuine interest in making and the creative industries
We're not restricting our search to the craft sector. The Chair doesn't need to be a maker — but they should understand why making matters.
