I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

What will you be doing?
The SDC is at an important developmental phase in its 139 years and is seeking a new Chair to join the team. The Interim Chair is reaching the end of a two year term during which clear, new strategic plans have been agreed and are in the process of being operationalised. Existing Council are committed to ensure a smooth transition and during this time are keen to ensure that a fit for purpose Council and structure for the organisation is achieved. The incoming Chair should have experience in transition management and building capacity to ensure the new strategy can be implemented. They will need to have strong vision and a passion for seeing the crafts sector flourish; and particularly to be keen to champion makers. The role would benefit from strong financial acuity – particularly in establishing a stable financial future for the society. A refurbishment of the London premises is about to take place. Experience in membership and funding would also be desirable. The role offers a great opportunity to build or consolidate a respected position within the Craft Sector and contribute to the aims of the organisation’s educational charitable remit.
