Job Description

Chartered Surveyor – Minerals Team – Role Overview

The BEAMS (Built Environment and Minerals Surveying Team) at the Valuation Office has exciting opportunities for RICS- qualified Chartered Surveyors, to join our Minerals Surveying team.

The BEAMS team prides itself on its professionalism, customer focus, and the provision of independent and impartial cost and surveying services. Our services are essential for maintaining the Agency's non-domestic rating list. BEAMS also extends its professional services to other government bodies. BEAMS is entrusted with the delivery of comprehensive mineral surveying services across a wide-ranging and technically diverse property portfolio.

This encompasses a variety of complex and specialist minerals and waste classes, including Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities, brickworks, concrete batching plants, High Speed 2 (HS2) infrastructure, and quarrying and tipping operations. Each property type presents challenges necessitating bespoke valuation approaches and a high level of technical proficiency.

This role offers an exciting opportunity for personal and professional development, supporting your career aspirations and long-term progression. You will benefit from comprehensive training and ongoing support designed to enhance your knowledge, build your skills, and help you reach your full potential.

In order to provide impartial advice, our team of Chartered Surveyors with expertise in waste management and minerals will need to travel throughout the country to meet business needs.

Chartered Surveyor – Minerals Team – Key Responsibilities

  • Your primary casework will involve the valuation of mineral and waste properties for Non-Domestic Rating purposes. You will also assist with other casework where mineral or waste management interests are involved.
  • You will maintain your knowledge through CPD (Continuous Professional Development) in areas of legislation, case law, codes of practice and professional standards relevant to your area of expertise and the work undertaken within the Built Environment Team.
  • You will manage and mitigate risks and issues, ensuring timely escalation to senior colleagues.
  • On occasion, you may be called upon to act as an expert witness at Valuation Tribunal and other courts as required. (Training and support in appearing as an expert witness will be provided)
  • You will provide mentoring, technical advice, and training to support graduates and apprentices on their APC pathways and to support the development of others within the immediate team or wider agency as required.
  • Travel and overnight stays away from home are necessary to facilitate work delivery. We are reasonable with our expectations and provide flexible working arrangements to support this need.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
