Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site Chef role based at The Garth Nursing Home in Kington. The Chef will plan, prepare, and present nutritious, appealing meals that meet residents’ dietary needs and preferences, including special diets and cultural considerations. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

The Chef will coordinate with care staff to understand individual dietary requirements, support mealtime routines, and ensure a positive dining experience for residents. The role also involves:

  • Supervising kitchen assistants when required
  • Contributing to continuous improvement of the catering service

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional cooking skills, including experience in volume catering or a care setting.
  • Knowledge of nutrition, dietary requirements, and menu planning for older adults and those with specific health needs.
  • Strong understanding of food safety, hygiene regulations, and health and safety practices in a commercial kitchen.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with care teams and communicate effectively with colleagues and residents.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and maintain consistency.
  • Relevant catering or chef qualification (e.g., NVQ or equivalent) and up-to-date food hygiene certification.
  • Previous experience in a nursing home, hospital, or similar care environment is desirable.
  • Commitment to person-centered care, respect for resident dignity, and a caring, patient approach.
