Salary & Benefits
- Salary: £27,319 with progression to £28,778 per annum

About the Role
Newcastle University, a globally recognised institution, invites experienced, multi-talented, and highly skilled Chefs to join its fast-paced, dynamic catering team. The opportunity lies within EAT@NEWCASTLE, the University’s in-house catering department.
You will contribute to providing high-quality food using either traditional cooking methods or cook-chill techniques to meet customer demand. This role requires flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work efficiently in a busy, multi-location environment across Newcastle University’s campus.
Typical duties include:
- Collaborating with kitchen porters and general assistants
- Managing deliveries and vehicle loading
- Adhering to Food Hygiene Regulations and safety protocols
- Working long shifts (e.g., 9 AM–5 PM or 10 AM–6 PM) with an 8+ hour daily commitment
- Participating in a rotating 5-day work pattern (notice of shifts always provided)
The role is both physically demanding and collaborative, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, loyalty, and personal fulfilment.
Key Accountabilities
- Prepare and produce high-standard food in line with the HACCP Policy (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point), whether using traditional cooking or cook-chill methods.
- Ensure compliance with food hygiene regulations, health & safety legislation, and operational procedures (e.g., monitoring food temperatures, maintaining equipment).
- Assist the line manager in planning menus and recipes to match current trends and customer demand.
- Order, manage, and use foodstock efficiently to maintain cost-effectiveness and minimise waste.
- Achieve agreed gross profit targets within your designated duties.
- Help coordinate catering staff to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Contribute to policy and procedure development to uphold best practice.
- Participate in training programmes (e.g., PDR, induction) and oversee or deliver training for colleagues.

Essential Requirements
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Experience in large-scale catering operations, preferably in a similar university or institutional setting.
- Up-to-date knowledge of food hygiene regulations, HACCP compliance and health & safety laws.
- Awareness of current catering industry trends and practices.

- Adaptability to work across multiple campus locations and in varying roles (e.g., kitchen-based or customer-facing).

Essential Qualifications
- Level 2 Food Safety for Caterers Certificate
- City & Guilds NVQ Level 1 or 2 in Food Production (706/1/2)
